30 Sep 2020 Appointment of interim National Commissioner welcomed
The next step has been taken in the Federal Government’s efforts to combat suicide in veterans and serving members of the Australian Defence Force with the appointment of the interim National Commissioner for Defence and Veteran Suicide Prevention.  Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Minister for Defence Personnel Darren Chester welcomed the announcement made by the Attorney-General Christian Porter today appointing Dr Bernadette Boss CSC to this important role.  More.....

29 Sep 2020 Adelaide team helps reopen reef
Navy clearance divers have helped reopen access to Elizabeth Reef, one of the world’s most significant and biologically diverse coral reefs.  The reef is situated within the Lord Howe Marine Park 550km from the New South Wales coastline.  A team from Australian Clearance Diving Team One supported by ship’s company from HMAS Adelaide (III) and air support from an embarked MRH-90 helicopter, worked to locate and remove an unexploded ordnance from the reef at the request of Parks Australia.  More.....
29 Sep 2020 Final tribute for seafarers
The ship’s company of HMAS Adelaide paid tribute to the lives of six fellow Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Navy Reserve seafarers as their ashes were committed to the sea. The ceremony was conducted by Chaplain Simote Finau as the ship transited from Elizabeth Reef, just off Lord Howe Island.  Those remembered were Warrant Officer Garry Kopp, Chief Petty Officer Frederick Churn and his wife Amelia Churn, Leading Seaman Stoker Ernest Brown, Leading Seaman Airman Photographer John Watt, Able Seaman Barrie Bourke and Musician First Class Gordon Crompton.  More.....
28 Sep 2020 Bond with Singapore reaffirmed at 25th iteration of exercise
The Australian and Singapore navies have reunited at sea for the 25th iteration of Exercise Singaroo.  The biennial maritime exercise tests warfare skills, enhances interoperability and reinforces the strong friendship of the two nations.  HMA Ships Hobart and Sirius are taking part in the three-day exercise in the waters off Singapore as part of the Regional Presence Deployment.  More.....

28 Sep 2020 Supporting ADF Reservists through COVID-19
The Morrison Government is continuing to support Australian Defence Force (ADF) Reservists through the COVID-19 pandemic with new initiatives announced today.
This includes:
* additional reserve days to provide supplementary employment for up to 21,000 existing Reservists;
* an additional 25,000 reserve days to help recruit up to 500 additional ADF Reservists; and
* an overall increase of up to 210,000 in the total reserve days for this financial year.  More..... 
26 Sep 2020 SA jobs boom as Osborne Shipyard is complete
South Australia’s world-leading shipyard at Osborne South is now complete and ready for handover, heralding the beginning of another local jobs boom with the commencement of the $45 billion Hunter Class Frigate program.  Prime Minister Scott Morrison said around 2,500 direct jobs would be created under the new Frigate program, which now starts in December when the first steel is cut for prototyping.  More.....

26 Sep 2020 Chinese Navy Crafts Unmanned Sea Hunter Knock-off
A candid photograph posted on Chinese social media sheds light on a Chinese project to develop an unmanned ship similar to the U.S. Navy’s Sea Hunter. The trimaran is remarkably similar to the Sea Hunter in almost every respect.  Although the designation of the project is unknown, based on imagery analysis, the builder and dimensions have been established.  More.....

The global coronavirus pandemic has increased the use of virtual technology and resulted in the adoption of new and inventive ways of doing things, including the recognition of important career achievements.  Ship's company of HMAS Cerberus has regularly proven their adaptability through COVID-19 restrictions.  Recently a number of staff were treated to the very first virtual presentation of honours and awards by Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Michael Noonan via a Zoom presentation.  More.....

The Royal Australian Navy and the Indian Navy demonstrated their interoperability during a recent passage exercise in the Northeast Indian Ocean.  HMAS Hobart sailed in company with INS Sahyadri and Karmuk, highlighting the close working relationship between the Royal Australian Navy and the Indian Navy.  More.....
25 Sep 2020 'B' Block Completely Refurbished
As part of the $500mil HMAS Cerberus Base Redevelopment Project, Building 188 or 'B' Block was completely refurbished. It has maintained its heritage facade on the eastern side whilst having a new contemporary facade on the western side of the building. 'B' Block is home to the Director Training Authority - Maritime Logistics & Health. This new transformed facility will provide training for Navy Sailors and Officers well into the future.
25 Sep 2020 Navy Indigenous Development Program 13 Graduation Ceremony
The Navy Indigenous Development Program is a pathway program the Royal Australian Navy offer to young indigenous adults to assist them to attain the required standard to permanently enlist in the Australian Defence Force.  The program has been running since 2014 and aligns with the Defence Reconciliation Action Plan (D-RAP) and the Australian Government’s agreement on Closing the Gap.

A Next Generation Navy (NGN) initiative to appropriately recognise the service and sacrifice of all Navy personnel and their families has seen the recent approval of formal retirement and discharge ceremonies.  In response to the 2018 Navy Organisational and Cultural review measuring Navy’s culture and climate, NGN identified a greater need to recognise our personnel who honourably complete their service.  These ceremonies are in addition to the awarding of the current Bronze, Silver and Gold service medallion.  More.....
25 Sep 2020 The Pentagon is eyeing a 500-ship Navy, documents reveal
The Pentagon’s upcoming recommendation for a future Navy is expected to call for a significant increase in the number of ships, with officials discussing a fleet as large as 530 hulls, according to documents obtained by Defense News.  Supporting documents to the forthcoming Future Navy Force Study reviewed by Defense News show the Navy moving towards a lighter force with many more ships but fewer aircraft carriers and large surface combatants. Instead, the fleet would include more small surface combatants, unmanned ships and submarines and an expanded logistics force.  More.....

Next year, the most advanced carrier air wing in history will sail to the Pacific aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70).  Last week, the Carrier Air Wing 2 took the first steps in getting its new F-35C Joint Strike Fighters and CMV-22B Ospreys integrated into the air wing and aboard the carrier.

21 Sep 2020 Cleanup on USS Bonhomme Richard Continues as Ship’s Fate Remains Unclear
USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) hasn’t moved from the pier-side spot where it caught fire on July 12 and burned for almost five days. The ship might not be moving anytime soon.  Investigations into the fire have been extended until at least until December, USNI News understands, and with them any decisions about the fate of the ship.  Still, with the ship still hot enough to need cool air pumped inside, the crew has settled into a new normal, spending their duty rotations helping clear out the amphibious assault ship and offload equipment that can be salvaged and put back into the Navy supply system.  More.....

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) Cyber Gap Program is now underway, offering financial support, mentoring and Defence work experience opportunities for cyber students across Australia.  There are 48 students enrolled in this year’s pilot Program, prior to a larger intake of 250 students in 2021.  Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Linda Reynolds CSC said the Program, which is run in partnership with the Digital Transformation Agency, represents an important step in diversifying the Defence cyber workforce.   More.....

For Midshipman Madeline Moroney, her ADF journey has taken her back to where she started just over a year ago.  She is working as a team leader at the police control point in Gisborne South in her hometown region of Goulburn Valley in Victoria.  Midshipman Moroney is a maritime logistics officer trainee, who with just two weeks left of her initial employment training at HMAS Cerberus, finds herself supporting Operation COVID-19 Assist.  More.....

VETERANS and their families in Melbourne will have easier access to Open Arms – Veterans & Families Counselling (Open Arms) with the office relocating to 303 Collins Street.  Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Darren Chester said despite the current coronavirus restrictions in Melbourne, work had continued on outfitting the new office space so veterans and their families would have improved access to support when face-to-face counselling resumes.  More.....

JUNIOR Maritime Warfare Officers have been able to continue their Navy training thanks to the Sail Training Ship Young Endeavour, with 57 officers completing their first at-sea training.  Minister for Defence Personnel Darren Chester congratulated the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme (YEYS) and Royal Australian Navy team who developed a modified youth development program.  More.....
18 Sep 2020 Unmanned Vessels Will Allow the Navy to Reach 355-Ship Fleet
Defense Secretary Mark Esper told sailors today that heavy investment in unmanned systems would be key to the U.S. Navy reaching 355 or more ships and having the lethality and survivability needed if a conflict were to break out with China.  Speaking aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) on Thursday morning, he told a few dozen sailors that “we’re investing a lot in unmanned vehicles, whether they are unmanned aircraft – and I see a vision of the future where every type of plane function that you see today on the deck would be, could be unmanned, should be unmanned. Australia is stepping up in the Pacific and continuing to deepen our engagement with our regional partners during COVID-19 with the handover of a new Guardian-class Patrol Boat to the Republic of Palau.  The vessel, PSS President HI Remeliik II, was received by Palauan Commanding Officer Lieutenant Commander Emerson Nobuo at a COVID-safe ceremony in Henderson, Western Australia, celebrating the latest milestone under the Pacific Maritime Security Program.  More.....

China’s pursuit of more aircraft carriers validates the U.S. Navy’s commitment to building more American aircraft carriers in the future, the U.S. admiral in charge of providing forces to the fleet said on Thursday.  “Good on ‘em. 15 Sep 2020 Capability on show as ships leave in formation
Six Australian warships departed Sydney Harbour in formation yesterday to complete a range of training, sea qualification and surveying tasks.  The ships were led by one of the fleet’s largest warships, HMAS Adelaide, followed by its newest ship, the destroyer HMAS Sydney. The formation was completed by three Huon-class ships, Huon, Gascoyne and Yarra and the Anzac-class frigate Anzac.  More.....
13 Sep 2020 RAN joins regional partners for Exercise Pacific Vanguard
The Royal Australian Navy joined an eight-ship fleet with more than 1,500 personnel aboard from Japan, the Republic of Korea and the United States for Exercise Pacific Vanguard, in waters off Guam.  Minister for Defence Linda Reynolds said the exercise brings together four key likeminded regional partners, working in support of a shared vision for a secure, open, prosperous and inclusive region. “The increasing complexity of our security environment highlights the importance of maintaining and growing our regional partnerships,” Reynolds said. “Ours is a strong community built on shared interests, and activities like Exercise Pacific Vanguard increase our ability to contribute to the peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific.”  More.....

World leading, Australian designed anti-missile technology has been installed on HMAS Adelaide by BAE Systems Australia in a ‘COVID-collaboration’ with the Royal Australian Navy.  Nulka is a rocket-propelled active missile decoy system that lures incoming anti-ship missiles away from ships, to protect them and their crews.  More.....
11 Sep 2020 Keel laid for first Offshore Patrol Vessel built in WA
The Morrison Government’s National Shipbuilding Program has reached another milestone with the keel laying for the first Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) under construction in WA.  Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Linda Reynolds CSC said the keel laying is an important naval tradition that brings good luck to the build of the ship and the life of the vessel by placing a coin under the keel.  More.....

11 Sep 2020 China expands its island-building strategy into the Pacific
The world knows the Republic of Kiribati as a very low-lying nation in the mid-Pacific that is in danger of inundation as the climate changes and sea levels rise.  Much less is known about its strategic location and the attention now being paid to it by Beijing, which has proposed large-scale dredging to reclaim land from lagoons.  The aims are to raise the height of atolls and create land for industrial development, including two major ports.  Australia will ignore this activity at its cost.  More.....

Petty Officer Peter Bellas knows more than most about mandatory quarantine.  In April he undertook 14 days of mandatory quarantine in a Sydney hotel after returning from Operation Manitou where he was conducting maritime security operations in the Middle East.  He is now posted to Operation COVID-19 Assist, helping new arrivals check into their quarantine hotels.  More.....

Boot-cleaning stations are the new innovative inclusions at HMAS Penguin, Sydney.  Three former pylons from the original 1942-built jetty were cleaned and restored to their former glory and given a new life.  The stations are located outside the administration building, the new weapons training systems facility and the leadership school.  More.....

The Morrison Government will build a Maritime Security Training Centre in Darwin to facilitate training of Royal Australian Navy and other Australian Defence Force members for Maritime Security operations.  Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Linda Reynolds CSC said this is one of a number of Defence initiatives that will support the Australian defence industry during the recovery from COVID-19.  More.....

09 Sep 2020 Navy Ends Search for Missing Sailor from USS Nimitz
The Navy has concluded the search for the sailor who has been missing and presumed to have gone overboard on Sunday, U.S. 5th Fleet announced on Tuesday afternoon.  Information Systems Technician 2nd Class Ian McKnight, 29, is presumed to have gone overboard on Sunday from USS Nimitz (CVN-68), which was operating in the North Arabian Sea.  More.....

Royal Australian Navy Chief Petty Officer Kieran Lamond, of Ballarat, Victoria, never thought he would work 30,000 feet above Iraq with the RAAF when he joined the ADF more than 18 years ago.  Chief Petty Officer Lamond was an E-7A Wedgetail senior surveillance and control officer with the ADF’s Air Task Group in the Middle East.  More.....

Edith Jessie Flanders was born on the 10 March 1921 and grew up on her father’s property 7 miles out of Harrow, Victoria.  Her mother did not have a licence and as she could not travel to school, she was educated by Governesses until she went to boarding school at age 14.
As dawn broke over Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance on Anzac Day 2018, war veterans gathered along St Kilda Road readying themselves for the annual march, their enthusiastic camaraderie warming the crisp, solemn autumn air.  Among these revered men and women who served our nation with valour was Jessie Flanders, who at 97 was marching in the Melbourne service for the very first time.  More.....

Two warships of the Royal Australian Navy have conducted high-end simulated sea combat on opposite coasts as part of Exercise VIKING RAIDER.  HMA Ships Brisbane and Anzac fought together in a real-time maritime warfare scenario using operation room simulators in New South Wales and Western Australia respectively.  More.....

VETERANS and their families are being encouraged to keep socially connected as part of Veterans’ Health Week, with $200,000 in funding available to community groups and ex-service organisations to assist with activities.  Veterans' Health Week will be held from Saturday, 24 October to Sunday, 1 November 2020 and communities are being encouraged to get creative to ensure events can still take place, with organisations able to apply for $720 in funding to support their activities.   More.....

“Beetle Bailey,” the comic strip centered around the perpetual goof-off and disobedient Army private, celebrated its 70th anniversary on Sept. 4.  Created by Mort Walker as a college themed strip in 1950, the strip follows Pvt. James “Beetle” Bailey and his Army buddies at Camp Swampy. It first became military-themed at the dawn of the Korean War, when Walker decided it was time Bailey enlisted in the Army.  More.....
07 Sep 2020 US Navy searching for missing Nimitz sailor in Arabian Sea
The U.S. Navy is conducting search-and-rescue efforts Sunday in the Arabian Sea following reports of a missing sailor.  The aircraft carrier Nimitz and guided-missile cruiser Princeton are conducting search-and-rescue operations, according to a news release from U.S. 5th Fleet Public Affairs.  The sailor is listed as “Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown” onboard the Nimitz.  The sailor’s name is being withheld in accordance with Navy policy.

HMAS Adelaide has been recognised with a 2020 Work Health and Safety Award for improving safety for personnel and extending the service life of some of the ship's key components.  The engineering team for the landing helicopter dock (LHD) designed and implemented new fan shrouds after a critical failure of the ship’s fan blade in 2017.  More.....

HMAS Gascoyne has evoked her motto "return to the sea" after completing her unit readiness evaluation in Jervis Bay.  The evaluation was a culmination of a long period of preparation, training and assessments for the crew, many of who deployed on Operation COVID-19 Assist earlier in the year.  More.....

First-aid personnel are enhancing Victoria's public testing as part of Operation COVID-19 Assist. Navy submariner and training instructor Petty Officer Gareth James is a member of HMAS Cerberus’ medical emergency team and was quick to volunteer to help.  Petty Officer James is based at the symptomatic testing site at Shepparton in regional Victoria and said the operation was similar to other deployments he had been on.  More.....

The Royal Australian Navy’s lead ship of the Supply Class auxiliary oiler replenishment (AOR) ships, NUSHIP Supply, has set sail from Navantia’s Ferrol shipyard for Australia.  The occasion was marked by a small ceremony held in Ferrol attended by senior Navantia personnel, the Royal Australian Navy’s defence attaché in Madrid, Captain Tim Byles, and the Department of Defence’s inspection team from Teekay.  More.....

HMAS Canberra returned to Sydney after a three-month deployment comprised of multilateral training exercises as part of a task group, maritime integration with Army elements and a successful search and rescue in the Pacific.  Commanding Officer Captain Terry Morrison commended the resilience and hard work of the ship’s company and embarked forces during a busy deployment without port visits because of COVID-19 restrictions.  More.....

BAE Systems Australia has welcomed a fifth ANZAC class warship to its Henderson facility as part of the fleet upgrade that will keep the ships in service until they are replaced by the Hunter class frigates. The ANZAC Mid Life Capability Assurance Program (AMCAP) upgrade is being undertaken by the Warship Asset Management Agreement (WAMA) Alliance. HMAS Toowoomba joins sister ships, Warramunga and Perth. Watercraft manufacturer The Whiskey Project Group, led by two Royal Australian Navy veterans, announced the acquisition of boat manufacturer and government supplier Yamba Welding & Engineering (YWE), and maritime design company Naiad, in a strategic move that they say helps secures Australian defence industry capability in the post-COVID economy and heralds a new era of sovereign design and industrial capability for military and specialist watercraft.  More.....

China is bent on creating a world-class military that can conduct joint operations across the globe and already boasts the world’s largest navy, according to the Pentagon’s latest annual assessment of the Chinese military.  A “permanent condition of military inferiority is anathema” to China’s leadership and nowhere is that more obvious in its naval build-up, Chad Sbragia, deputy assistant secretary of defense for China, said during a Tuesday American Enterprise Institute forum.  More.....

Laying a wreath at the Australian War Memorial on August 31 at the launch of Legacy Week, widow Denise Bird described the organisation as being like an extended family.  “As soon as you’re widowed, you’ve got an enormous amount of work to do trying to sort everything,” Mrs Bird said.  “Legacy were such a help. They sat me down, talked me through what I had to do and photocopied things for me.”  More.....

01 Sep 2020 Australian Icebreaker RSV Nuyina at Damen Vlissingen Shipyard for Sea Trails
Damen has been working on the Australian Antarctic Supply Research Vessel (ASRV) since 2016.  A floating laboratory icebreaker that will carry out research in the Southern Oceans and around Antarctica.  After the initial construction of RSV Nuyina at Damen Shipyards Galati in Romania, the ship is now undertaking final commissioning tests and being prepared for sea trials in Vlissingen, the Netherlands.  Damen is building the vessel for Serco Group on behalf of the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD).  RSV Nuyina will be one of the most advanced scientific research vessels in the world.  More.....
01 Sep 2020 Multinational exercise Rim of the Pacific 2020 concludes
The international maritime exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2020 concluded Aug. 31 following two weeks of at-sea-only training events conducted around the Hawaiian Islands.  This year’s event included 53 replenishment-at-sea events, 101 pallets of cargo distributed, over 16,000 rounds of small arms munitions shot, over 1,000 large caliber weapons fired, 13 missiles expended, and 1,100 pounds of mail delivered.  More.....

01 Sep 2020 RIMPAC 2020 Participants Conduct Sinking Exercise
Live fire from ships and aircraft participating in the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise sank the decommissioned amphibious cargo ship ex-USS Durham (LKA 114), Aug. 30.  The sinking exercise (SINKEX) provided participating units the opportunity to gain proficiency and confidence in their weapons and systems through realistic training that could not be duplicated in simulators.  More.....
