25 Jan 2019 Is pressurised submarine escape training really too dangerous?
The Royal Australian Navy has stopped its longstanding program of using pressurised submarine escape training to teach crews how to exit a stricken vessel.  The decision to stop submariners practising escapes using a tower containing a 22-metre-high column of water would not have been taken lightly, so let’s consider the issues that would (or should) have been considered.  More.....

In the midst of the discussion about the Royal Australian Navy’s future frigate and submarine programs, it’s important to acknowledge the significance of their continuous nature and to remember that they have design and building elements.  While the qualities of the Hunter-class frigates and Attack-class submarines are significant in and of themselves, they must be understood as part of an overall national endeavour.  More.....
23 Jan 2019 Should Australia follow Japan and take the F-35 to sea?
Japan’s decision to deploy the short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) variant of the joint strike fighter, the F-35B, from its Izumo-class warships will transform them into what many predicted they would eventually become—small aircraft carriers.  The jets based on JS Izumo, and its sister ship the Kaga, will be constrained to short-range roles by Japan’s lack of an in-flight refuelling option for the F-35B.  More.....

17 Jan 2019 US could ask Australia to host nuclear missiles
What would we say if Washington asked to base nuclear-armed missiles, aimed at China, on Australian territory?  It’s not an entirely hypothetical question.  Amid all the talk of a new cold war with China, the strategic logic of America’s plans to withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty plainly suggests that such a request is a real possibility.  More.....
