31 Aug 2019 HMS Queen Elizabeth sails for landmark F-35 trials
HMS Queen Elizabeth has sailed from her homeport Portsmouth today ahead of testing the UK’s F-35B Lightning fast fighter jets for the very first time.  The Royal Navy’s biggest warship will be working with up to seven British F-35B jets during her Westlant 19 deployment, which sees her once again return to the east coast of North America.  More.....

The Royal Australian Navy is another step closer to welcoming its new fleet of support tankers into service, following the successful launch of NUSHIP Stalwart at today’s ceremony in Ferrol, Spain.  The delivery into service of the Supply class replenishment vessels from next year will provide Navy with vital afloat logistics support to enable our ships to remain at sea longer.  More.....

Tomorrow we commemorate Malaya and Borneo Veterans' Day and recognise the Australian military personnel who fought in the Malayan Emergency (1948–60) and the Indonesian Confrontation, or Konfrontasi (1962–66).  Minister for Veterans and Defence Personnel Darren Chester said while these two post-Second World War conflicts might not be well-known in the Australian community, it is important we thank those who served in Malaya and on Borneo, and the families that supported them.  More.....

The US Navy will hold its first-ever joint maritime drill with all 10 ASEAN member states next month.  According to the US embassy in Bangkok, the purpose of the maritime exercise is to ‘maintain maritime security, focus on prevention and pre-empt wrongdoing in the sea’.  The announcement came after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sought support for the Trump administration’s Indo-Pacific strategy at a regional summit earlier this month.  More.....

24 Aug 2019 Photos reveal progress on China’s largest amphibious assault ship
Recent photos reveal the construction of China’s largest amphibious assault ship is progressing at a shipyard in the metropolis of Shanghai, as the country strives to plug gaps in its military’s amphibious capabilities.  One photo, taken from a boat sailing on the Huangpu River, which runs through Shanghai, eastern China, shows the main bridge structure has recently been joined to the hull of the first Type 075 amphibious assault ship.  More.....
23 Aug 2019 US Navy welcomes new Chief of Naval Operations
The US Navy welcomed its new Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) in a ceremony at the Washington Navy Yard on August 22, as Adm. Mike Gilday took over from Adm. John Richardson.  Gilday became the 32nd CNO, as a three-star, and became admiral upon assuming his role as the US Navy’s most senior officer.  The last time sitting four-star admirals were bypassed was in 1970 when then-Vice Adm. Elmo Zumwalt was nominated to be CNO.  More.....

21 Aug 2019 Captain Stevenson's ashes committed to the sea
HMAS Melbourne (III)’s final cruise has also served as a fitting final voyage for the ashes of Captain John Philip Stevenson.  Captain Stevenson was a Commanding Officer of the previous warship to carry the name Melbourne, and passed away in February this year at the age of 98.  Among Captain Stevenson’s final wishes was for his ashes to be scattered near Gabo Island, off the South West coast of Victoria, where he’d scattered ashes of his father - Rear Admiral John Bryan Stevenson.  More.....

The Morrison Government is reaffirming its commitment to freedom of navigation and safe passage through the Gulf by announcing it will support an international maritime security mission.  This mission will see the Australian Defence Force work alongside its international partners to assure the security of merchant vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.  More.....

The third of 21 Guardian-class patrol boats donated by Australia to partners in the Pacific region has been escorted to Tonga by HMAS Armidale.  The soon to be commissioned ship, Ngahau Koula was delivered to Tonga as part of the Australian Government’s Pacific Maritime Security Program.  More.....

16 Aug 2019 Lockheed Martin to fund ‘best of breed’ solutions for future submarines
Lockheed Martin Australia has announced a second round of research and development request for quotes for industry and academic organisations to develop advanced technologies in support of Australia’s Attack Class submarine fleet.  The first round of R&D grants saw more than $900,000 allocated to industry and academic institutions in March 2019. This second round of research and development seeding grants will see grants of $75,000 each with the opportunity to develop a white paper on advanced technologies for Australia’s Attack Class Submarine Program.  More.....

The Australian Government has today handed over the newest Guardian-class Patrol Boat Nafanua II to the Samoan Government at a ceremony in Henderson, Western Australia.  Nafanua II was received by Samoa’s Deputy Prime Minister the Honourable Fiame Naomi Mata'afa and the Commissioner of Police Mr Fuivaili’ili Egon Keil.  More.....

THE Federal Government will undertake a nationwide search for a new director of the Australian War Memorial after Dr Brendan Nelson AO has announced that he would finish in the role at the end of the year.  After seven years as Director, Dr Nelson told Australian War Memorial staff this morning that he will conclude his service when his appointment ceases at the end of the year.  More.....

Shipbuilders and sailors have fixed the propulsion plant problems on the USS Gerald R. Ford, the first of a new class of supercarriers that is behind schedule, over budget, and still struggling with development issues.  Work on the ship’s propulsion plant was completed toward the end of July, the Navy announced in a statement Monday.  More.....

14 Aug 2019 Hong Kong port visits by 2 Navy ships denied by China amid unrest
U.S. officials say the Chinese government has denied requests for two U.S. Navy ships to make port visits to Hong Kong amid civil unrest.  Cmdr. Nate Christensen, deputy spokesman for the U.S. Pacific Fleet, said Tuesday said the amphibious transport dock ship Green Bay had been scheduled to visit Hong Kong on Aug. 17 and the guided-missile cruiser Lake Erie was scheduled to visit in September.  More.....
14 Aug 2019 UK takes command of Bahrain-based Combined Task Force 150
A UK-led joint staff of Royal Navy and French Marine Nationale assumed command of the Bahrain-based Combined Task Force (CTF) 150 from the Pakistan Navy on August 8.  During the ceremony at the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) headquarters in Bahrain, command of CTF 150 was passed from Commodore Alveer Ahmed Noor of the Pakistan Navy to Commodore Edward Ahlgren, OBE, Royal Navy.  More.....
14 Aug 2019 NATO group heads for US, Canadian coasts
Ships from NATO’s Standing Maritime Group One (SNMG1) are en route to the United States and Canada after assembling in Brest, France on August 4 to begin SNMG1’s second semester.  The group is transiting the Atlantic Ocean to start SNMG1’s Maritime Express initiative, a new construct designed to open up more opportunities for NATO partners and allies to train together.  More.....

13 Aug 2019 Russia buries 5 nuke engineers following explosion
Thousands of Russians attended the funerals Monday of five Russian nuclear engineers killed by an explosion as they tested a new rocket, a tragedy that fueled radiation fears and raised new questions about a secretive weapons program.  The engineers, who died Thursday, were laid to rest Monday in Sarov, which hosts Russia’s main nuclear weapons research center, where they worked.  More.....

12 Aug 2019 Royal Navy submariners sacked after testing positive for cocaine
The Royal Navy has discharged three submariners after they failed a compulsory drug test.  The submariners are understood to have served aboard Vanguard-class submarine HMS Vengeance.  According to UK media reports, the submarine’s crew was tested after cleaners found cocaine packages in the cabins following a run ashore in Florida.  More.....

A wargame publisher has been hired to help explore ways the Royal Navy and other UK armed forces services could use games for educational purposes.  UK’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) has awarded gaming company Slitherine a two-year contract worth up to £1.5 million to demonstrate the potential of games to enhance training.  More.....

Overview
The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) wants its dental and allied health service arrangements to continue meeting the needs of veterans and their families.

For this reason, DVA is making changes to strengthen the quality of allied health care. From October 2019, this will include increasing general practitioner (GP) involvement in treatment. The aim is to make sure that clients get the clinically necessary allied health treatment that they need. As a DVA cardholder, your need for allied health care will be determined by your GP in consultation with you.  More.....

09 Aug 2019 Russian Navy nuclear test site explosion kills two, injures six
An explosion at a Russian military range in Nyonoksa in the north western Arkhangelsk region on August 8 killed two and injured another six service members, defense officials have confirmed.  The Arctic missile test site is used by the Russian Navy to test intercontinental ballistic missiles.  More.....

Leading Seaman Ruby Flinders was promoted to the rank of Petty Officer last week in what was a special milestone for the four-legged sailor and her proud shipmates.  Petty Officer Flinders is posted to West Head Gunnery Range on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, where she serves as the range’s mascot and brings joy to the ship’s company every day.  More.....

08 Aug 2019 Navy hero awarded for bravery in 1969
A former Royal Australian Navy sailor who has been awarded for his bravery in the aftermath of a tragic accident 50 years ago will never forget the fear he experienced that fateful morning.  Able Seaman Radar Plotter Lew Farkas was on board HMAS Melbourne (II) in the early hours of 3 June 1969 when the USS Frank E Evans collided with the Royal Australian Navy aircraft carrier after crossing her bow in the South China Sea.  More.....

07 Aug 2019 A hazy future: Amid a competition to build British frigates, a UK shipyard hits hard times
The Northern Irish shipyard that built the Titanic ceased business Aug. 5, and its part in a bid to build a new class of the general-purpose frigate for the British Royal Navy appears to have sunk with it.  Harland and Wolff was the lead U.K. yard in a proposal by German-based warship company Atlas Elektronik to build five Type 31e frigates for the Royal Navy.  More.....

DST graduates Cassandra Heffernan and Tom Fahy were recently introduced to the world of defence science experimentation to explore the impact of different levels of integration between a UAS capability with radar, electronic support and electro-optic sensors and a ship’s own sensors within a combat system.  Heffernan and Fahy helped experienced practitioners Kingsley Fletcher and Susan Cockshell put Navy personnel through a series of tasks to explore the impact of working with uninhabited aerial systems (UAS) on crew performance and workload.  More.....

Last Wednesday, a Chinese naval warship collided with a Taiwanese freighter in the Taiwan Strait at around 8 pm local time.  Both vessels suffered hull damage.  The cargo ship made it safely to Liaoluo Port in Kinmen but the Chinese vessel kept going.  The Taiwan coastguard caught up with the ship at around midnight but was unable to identify its hull number in the darkness.  Authorities are now investigating the incident to determine whether it was an accident or a deliberate act.  More.....

HMAS Leeuwin arrived in Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia, ahead of the inauguration of the country’s ninth President, David W Panuelo, on 29 July 2019.  The ship provided a setting for a celebratory luncheon honouring President Panuelo, jointly hosted by the Honourable Alex Hawke, MP, Assistant Defence Minister and Minister for International Development and the Pacific and the Honourable Robert Wilkie, United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs.  More.....

02 Aug 2019 New Pilots prepare to take to the skies from sea and land
Set within Navy’s 723 Squadron at HMAS Albatross, the Joint Helicopter School was designed to provide the foundation skills needed by future pilots, aircrew and Aviation Warfare Officers to operate the highly sophisticated combat helicopters used by the Royal Australian Navy and Australian Army.  Seventeen students graduated from the intensive 26 week course in a ceremony on 26 July.  More.....

01 Aug 2019 Flotilla welcomes Chilean Navy to Sydney
A flotilla of tall ships and a Royal Australian Navy guided missile frigate welcomed Chilean Navy tall ship Buque Escuela Esmeralda to Sydney today.  HMAS Melbourne led the parade of tall ships into Sydney Heads. Royal Australian Navy operated STS Young Endeavour was the first of the tall ships in formation, followed by the spectacular four-masted burquentine TS Esmeralda.  Sydney based tall ships James Craig, Soren Larsen and MV Martindale brought up the rear.  More.....

More than 270 Australian Defence Force personnel have been farewelled at Robertson Barracks in Darwin today ahead of their upcoming deployment to the Middle East Region.   The ADF contingent are largely from the Australian Army’s 1st Brigade, and will deploy on a six to eight month rotation as part of Theatre Communications Group-9 (TCG-9) and Force Protection Element-12 (FPE-12).  More.....
