27 Aug 2019	The five-domains update Sea state The US Navy will hold its first-ever joint maritime drill with all 10 ASEAN member states next month. According to the US embassy in Bangkok, the purpose of the maritime exercise is to ‘maintain maritime security, focus on prevention and pre-empt wrongdoing in the sea’. The announcement came after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sought support for the Trump administration’s Indo-Pacific strategy at a regional summit earlier this month. More.....

23 Aug 2019	US Navy welcomes new Chief of Naval Operations The US Navy welcomed its new Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) in a ceremony at the Washington Navy Yard on August 22, as Adm. Mike Gilday took over from Adm. John Richardson. Gilday became the 32nd CNO, as a three-star, and became admiral upon assuming his role as the US Navy’s most senior officer. The last time sitting four-star admirals were bypassed was in 1970 when then-Vice Adm. Elmo Zumwalt was nominated to be CNO. More.....

21 Aug 2019	Captain Stevenson's ashes committed to the sea HMAS Melbourne (III)’s final cruise has also served as a fitting final voyage for the ashes of Captain John Philip Stevenson. Captain Stevenson was a Commanding Officer of the previous warship to carry the name Melbourne, and passed away in February this year at the age of 98. Among Captain Stevenson’s final wishes was for his ashes to be scattered near Gabo Island, off the South West coast of Victoria, where he’d scattered ashes of his father - Rear Admiral John Bryan Stevenson. Cmdr. Nate Christensen, deputy spokesman for the U.S. Pacific Fleet, said Tuesday said the amphibious transport dock ship Green Bay had been scheduled to visit Hong Kong on Aug. 17 and the guided-missile cruiser Lake Erie was scheduled to visit in September. 06 Aug 2019	The five-domains update Sea state Last Wednesday, a Chinese naval warship collided with a Taiwanese freighter in the Taiwan Strait at around 8 pm local time. Both vessels suffered hull damage. The cargo ship made it safely to Liaoluo Port in Kinmen but the Chinese vessel kept going. The Taiwan coastguard caught up with the ship at around midnight but was unable to identify its hull number in the darkness. Authorities are now investigating the incident to determine whether it was an accident or a deliberate act. More.....

HMAS Melbourne led the parade of tall ships into Sydney Heads. Royal Australian Navy operated STS Young Endeavour was the first of the tall ships in formation, followed by the spectacular four-masted burquentine TS Esmeralda.
