31 Mar 2018 HMAS Adelaide in Melbourne
HMAS Adelaide sailed into Melbourne last week, returning for the first time to the city where she was built.  The ship came alongside at Station Pier near St Kilda Beach to resupply following a busy program of exercises off the east coast.  The port visit also provided the ship’s company with weekend respite.  Commanding Officer, Captain Jonathan Earley said Melbourne is always a special port to visit and it’s great for HMAS Adelaide to be back in the city where she was fitted out.  More.....
30 Mar 2018 Royal Australian Navy warship refuels at Gore Bay first time since 1901
Royal Australian Navy (RAN) frigate HMAS Parramatta has taken part in a refueling trial at the Gore Bay facility in Sydney Harbour, one of Australia’s oldest fuel import and storage facilities.  As informed, the event marked the first time since 1901 that a warship, other than navy tankers HMA Ships Westralia in 1993 and Sirius in 2017, had been refuelled at the site.  More.....

April will mark the start of a significant program of military commemorations in Australia and overseas, with 2018 culminating in the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.  Armistice Day, 11 November 2018, will mark the end of the most important commemorative period in Australia’s history - the Anzac Centenary spanning 2014-2018.  Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Darren Chester encourages all Australians to attend the domestic and overseas commemorations throughout 2018 to recognise the service and sacrifice of the men and women who have fought to defend our country in all wars and peacekeeping operations.  More.....
29 Mar 2018 US Navy Honours the Service of Vietnam War Veterans
The Naval History and Heritage Command held a commemoration ceremony in honour of Vietnam War Veterans Day at the National Museum of the U.S. Navy's Cold War Gallery located on the Washington Navy Yard, March 29.  The Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017, designates March 29 of each year as Vietnam War Veterans Day.  The ceremony honoured and recognized the heroism of the Sailors, Marines, Airmen and Soldiers who served during the Vietnam War.  "I think this commemoration is particularly important because when they came home Vietnam War veterans did not get the recognition for their courage and valour that they deserved," said retired Rear Adm. Sam Cox, "Hosting this event is an opportunity to do the right thing even though it's well overdue."  More.....
28 Mar 2018 Independent inquiry into the system of compensation and rehabilitation for veterans
The Turnbull Government has today announced a Productivity Commission inquiry into the system of compensation and rehabilitation for veterans.  The Commission is the Government's independent research and advisory body on a range of issues affecting the welfare of Australians.  This inquiry will examine whether the system of compensation and rehabilitation for veterans is fit for purpose now and into the future.  It follows the Government’s response to a report by the Senate Standing Committee on Defence, Foreign Affairs and Trade on suicide by veterans and ex-service personnel.  More.....
28 Mar 2018 Enhancing space surveillance capabilities for the ADF
A new project focused on improving Navy vessels’ safety, speed, and fuel consumption, through the better use of unmanned aerial platforms has commenced.  Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP, said the new $1.1 million Defence Materials Technology Centre (DMTC) project aims to enhance Australian defence capability and build industrial capacity in sensor and on-board data processing technology for unmanned aerial systems and small-satellite platforms.  More.....
27 March 2018 Schiebel’s Camcopter UAS completes Australian Navy testing
The Royal Australian Navy has completed validation and verification trials of Schiebel’s Camcopter S-100 unmanned air system (UAS), the UAS manufacturer has announced.  According to Schiebel, the S-100 was equipped with a Wescam MX-10S payload showcasing its ability to deliver imagery to commanders.  The tests were carried out at at the Jervis Bay Airfield facilities in New South Wales, Australia.  More.....

23 Mar 2018 Beijing accuses US of ‘serious provocation’ after destroyer sails through disputed South China Sea
USS Mustin’s voyage near Mischief Reef prompts angry response a day after America announced plan to impose US$60 billion tariffs on Chinese imports.  China accused America of “serious military provocation” after a US Navy destroyer sailed within 12 nautical miles of an artificial island in the South China Sea – one day after the first move in what could develop into a full-blown trade war between the world’s two largest economies.  More.....
23 Mar 2018 US sails destroyer near Chinese claimed island
The US Navy destroyer USS Mustin (DDG 89) sailed close to an artificial island built by China in the South China Sea, Reuters reported citing US officials.  On March 23, 2018, the destroyer reportedly approached Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands, a disputed area.  The operation, called by the US Navy the freedom of navigation comes despite Chinese government’s efforts to control navigation in these waters.  More.....
23 Mar 2018 British and Australian sailors remember tragic World War 1 submarine loss
With the sun setting over the tropical waters off Papua New Guinea, sailors on frigates HMS Sutherland and HMAS Toowoomba line up on their flight decks over the wreck of Australia’s first submarine.  For the first time since the remains of HMAS AE1 were discovered, Britons and Australians have held a joint service of remembrance in honour of 35 men killed in the first days of World War 1.  More.....
23 Mar 2018 Navy's Deputy Chief hands over the weight in Canberra ceremony
The Royal Australian Navy has a new Deputy Chief, with RADM Mark Hammond taking over duties from RADM Mike Noonan in Canberra.  ‘Taking the weight’ is a Navy tradition, practised both at sea and ashore.  The ‘weight’ in this case is a newly created statue, featuring a male sailor and a female officer.  The statues represent Navy people which are a key element of the Deputy Chief of Navy’s (DCN) brief.  More.....

Thousands of schools, libraries, ex-service and other organisations will receive a package of educational resources in the Anzac Day mailout commencing from this week said Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Darren Chester.  “The Anzac Day mailout is a significant annual exercise designed to ensure new generations of Australians understand our country’s role wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations and the sacrifice so many Australians made in defence of our nation,” Mr Chester said.  More.....
22 Mar 2018 Royal Navy prepares for future UK fishery patrols
The Royal Navy is preparing to support the monitoring and protection of UK fisheries after Britain leaves the EU, having taken delivery of the first of five next-generation Offshore Patrol ships for the fleet.  HMS Forth is the first of five state-of-the-art Royal Navy vessels designed for fishery protection, as well as counter-piracy, anti-smuggling, border patrol, counter terrorism and maritime defence duties.  More.....
22 Mar 2018 Charity golf day supports White Ribbon
Senior sailors at HMAS Cerberus have raised more than $5,000 for White Ribbon Australia during the annual Warrant Officer and Senior Sailors Mess charity golf day, supporting a nationwide campaign to prevent violence against women.  More than 90 members of ship’s company competed in the charity tournament at the Cerberus Golf Club to raise funds for White Ribbon Australia and reaffirm Navy’s commitment to preventing violence against women.  More.....
22 Mar 2018 Delivering better services for veterans and their families
Veterans and their families will receive increased support services and income support payments after the Senate passed new legislation today.  The legislation follows a $31 million boost to mental health services which was announced late last year.  Minister for Veterans' Affairs Darren Chester said the legislation was part of the Turnbull Government's ongoing commitment to improve services for veterans and their families and delivers a significant part of the Government’s response to the concerns raised in the Senate Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Reference’s committee report.  More.....
22 Mar 2018 Navy joins forces with Victoria Police
A team of Naval Police Coxswains have combined forces with officers of the Victoria Police to carry out a road safety operation at HMAS Cerberus.  Operation ADIONA was named for the Roman goddess of travel and safe return and brought together Navy members of the Military Police and Victorian police of the Highway Patrol unit.  The team conducted roadside breath testing, mobile drug testing of both Defence members and civilians entering Cerberus as well as registration and roadworthiness checks.  More.....
20 Mar 2018 Fast-attack subs practice firing torpedoes beneath Arctic ice
Fast-attack submarines fired torpedoes beneath the ice during the Navy’s five-week Ice Exercise that kicked off this month in the Arctic Ocean.  The Seawolf-class USS Connecticut and the Los Angeles-class USS Hartford each fired several training torpedoes, which carry no warheads and hold a minimal amount of fuel, the service said.  In step two of the torpedo drill, divers from the Navy’s Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit Two and Underwater Construction Team One and the Coast Guard plunged through ice holes to retrieve the torpedoes.  More.....
20 Mar 2018 Veteran pensions set to increase
Veteran pension payments will increase in March in line with the biannual indexation process.  Pension recipients including veterans, their partners, war widows and widowers across Australia will receive increased payments from 20 March 2018.  Due to the calculation of pension rates on a daily basis, the first pension paid after the indexation on payday 29 March 2018 will comprise both the old and new rates.  The new pension rates will be fully effective from payment date 12 April 2018.  New fortnightly rates.....

20 Mar 2018 Paul Allen’s research vessel (R/V) Petrel locates another WWII warship
US Navy’s World War II Atlanta-class light cruiser USS Juneau (CL-52) was located off the coast of the Solomon Islands in South Pacific by the crew research vessel (R/V) Petrel.  The Juneau was sunk by a Japanese torpedo during the Battle of Guadalcanal, ultimately killing 687 men including all five of the Sullivan brothers.  “We certainly didn’t plan to find the Juneau on St. Patrick’s Day.  The variables of these searches are just too great,” said Robert Kraft, director of subsea operations for Paul Allen.  “But finding the USS Juneau on Saint Patrick’s Day is an unexpected coincidence to the Sullivan brothers and all the service members who were lost 76 years ago.”  More.....
19 Mar 2018 KBR wins Future Submarine Construction Yard concept design contract
Naval Group Australia has partnered with KBR to support the design of the Future Submarine Construction Yard, a vital piece of the Osborne Naval shipbuilding precinct.  Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP, said the Future Submarine Construction Yard would sit alongside the surface shipyard, which will deliver the Royal Australian Navy’s Future Frigates.  More.....
16 Mar 2018 Japan Coast Guard recommends negligent homicide charges in Fitzgerald collision
The Japan Coast Guard has recommended negligent homicide charges for the USS Fitzgerald’s officer of the deck and the ACX Crystal’s second officer after a deadly collision last year.  The guidance, announced Thursday, comes after the conclusion of an investigation that determined both officers were responsible for the June 17 incident that killed seven Fitzgerald sailors after the destroyer crashed into the cargo ship about 60 miles southwest of Yokosuka.  More.....
16 Mar 2018 Remembering heroism and sacrifice of Australian Army Nurses
On the 14th of February 1942, 22 Australian Army nurses and other survivors waded ashore at Radji Beach, Bangka Island in what is now Indonesia after their ship, the Vyner Brooke succumbed to Japanese air attack, sinking in the Bangka Strait.  Two days later, Imperial Japanese Forces discovered the party of survivors on Radji Beach.  Offering no quarter, they systematically bayoneted the men, both able bodied and wounded, and then marched the Australian nurses into the surf where they met their deaths in a hail of machine gun fire.  More.....
16 Mar 2018 INVITATION - Launch of Australia's First Report into Family Violence and Brain Injury
We now know from Prof. ‘Sandy” Mc Farlane's work at the University of Adelaide that one in ten service personnel returning from overseas combat zones since the commencement of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars has a degree of brain injury.  The extent of severity of this injury is very wide ranging but the long term effects remain unclear and our Community needs the best preparation possible before any problems do escalate.

15 Mar 2018 Scrap Iron Flotilla Luncheon
As may know the Scrap Iron Flotilla Association has scheduled their annual lunch for 1200-1230 - Friday, 23rd March at the William Angliss Restaurant, Lt Lonsdale Street, Melbourne.

We are privileged to have Rear Admiral Peter Briggs AO CSC RAN Rtd as our Guest of Honour and the Admiral will present on 'Finding of the AE1'.  As you know, the Admiral was instrumental in initiating the search that culminated in the find, an important discovery.  The sad outcome of the find is indeed a ‘rusting hulk is their tombstone’ on the ocean bed.

The cost is a mere $35, payable on the day. This covers a 3 course meal, drinks at bar prices.

15 Mar 2018 Grants supporting ex-service organisations now open for applications
Applications are now open for the Building Excellence in Support and Training (BEST) grants and Grants-in-Aid for ex-service organisations announced by Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Darren Chester today.  “These grants help ex-service organisations provide vital advocacy services for current and former serving men and women which help veterans with their compensation claims and also ensure they get correct access to entitlements and services,” Mr Chester said.   More.....
15 Mar 2018 Trading places underwater for a cause
At the end of a long and successful deployment, most submariners dream of seeing loved ones, a long hot shower and their own bed - and everyone longs for the luxury of open space.  As the only person on board with “room to swing a cat”, HMAS Dechaineux Commanding Officer Commander Dan Sutherland recently decided to share this privilege for one day, for a good cause.  After the hectic pace of multinational exercises and Dechaineux’s recent deployment drawing to a close, CMDR Sutherland spread the word that the illustrious position of ‘Captain for a Day’ would be auctioned off to the highest bidder, with all proceeds going to Soldier On.  More.....
15 Mar 2018 Australian submarine holds burial at sea ceremony for Royal Navy submariners
Sailors aboard the Royal Australian Navy’s Collins-class submarine HMAS Rankin held a burial at sea ceremony recently, scattering the ashes of three former Royal Navy submariners off the coast of Western Australia.  The ceremony is known as a Committal of Ashes to the Sea (COATS) in the Royal Australian Navy and was carried out under a reciprocal arrangement that the Royal Australian Navy has with the UK’s Royal Navy.  More.....

The stories of several new recruits taking their first steps towards their dream jobs as part of the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) Indigenous Development Program were launched today by Minister for Defence Personnel Darren Chester.  Mr Chester said the Navy and Army Indigenous Development Programs (NIDP and AIDP) are important initiatives which enable new recruits to develop skills, knowledge and confidence to pursue an exciting career in the ADF.  More.....
14 Mar 2018 Qinetiq, CSIRO to boost Australian Future Submarines’ CO2 capturing tech
Royal Australian Navy’s Future Submarines could benefit from new carbon dioxide capturing technology which would allow the submarines to stay submerged for longer periods of time.  The Australian national science agency CSIRO is teaming up with engineering services company QinetiQ on a project that aims to provide better conditions for sailors through the use of advanced crystal technology called Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs).  More.....
14 Mar 2018 Submarines surface in the Arctic Circle as part of ICEX 2018
Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine USS Hartford (SSN 768) and Seawolf-class fast attack submarine, USS Connecticut (SSN 22) broke through the ice in the Arctic Circle north of Alaska.  Both fast-attack submarines as well the UK Royal Navy submarine HMS Trenchant (S91), are participating in the biennial exercise in the Arctic to train and validate the warfighting capabilities of submarines in extreme cold-water conditions.  More.....

13 Mar 2018 Report released into fate of HMAS AE1
Australia’s first submarine was most likely lost during an underwater operation off the coast of Papua New Guinea as it returned to Rabaul, according to the findings of a report from the expedition that found the wreck of HMAS AE1.  Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, said the images collected during the expedition showed that the boat’s guardrails were stowed and hatches appeared to be shut.  “These first assessments from the expedition indicate that the AE1 was configured to be in a state for underwater operations,” Minister Payne said.  More.....

09 Mar 2018 CMF: 132 kg of heroin found in another drug bust
Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) continued its recent string of success by seizing 132 kgs of heroin in the Arabian Sea on March 6.  Her Majesty’s Australian Ship (HMAS) Warramunga boarded her third vessel in just four days, interdicting over USD 30 million worth of heroin.  Combined Task Force (CTF) 150, CMF’s counter-terrorism and maritime security task force seized 12,216 kgs of hashish and 132 kgs of heroin from 3-6 March in the Arabian Sea.  More.....
09 Mar 2018 French destroyer seizes more than 4 tons of drugs
On 5 March 2018, the French Marine Nationale destroyer Jean de Vienne seized over four tons of hashish during an operation in the international waters of the Arabian Sea, Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) said.  Jean de Vienne’s seizure is the third for CTF150 in recent days.  Together with Her Majesty’s Australian Ship (HMAS) Warramunga, the two ships have confiscated over USD 400 million of narcotics in just 48 hours.  More.....
09 Mar 2018 Tenth successful interdiction for HMAS Warramunga
HMAS Warramunga’s crew has seized record amounts of narcotics on Operation Manitou following their latest interdiction.  In the latest haul, the crew of the Royal Australian Navy frigate seized approximately 132 kilograms of heroin valued at almost $40 million while patrolling international waters of the Arabian Sea on 6 March 2018.  The illegal narcotics interdiction is Warramunga’s third seizure in the past seven days having also seized in excess of eight tonnes of hashish from two vessels just days earlier.  It’s the 10th vessel interdicted overall since the ship deployed to the region in November 2017.  More.....

08 Mar 2018 International Women’s Day - honouring the service and sacrifice of women
Today the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Darren Chester marked International Women’s Day by attending a morning tea with the War Widows Guild and their supporting organisations paying tribute to the contribution of women to the armed services throughout a Century of Service.  “I encourage all Australians to recognise and respect the role women have played serving our nation in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations since the Boer War in South Africa from 1899-1902,” Mr Chester said.  More.....
08 Mar 2018 Singapore Navy moves towards unmanned future
The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) revealed it is in the midst of introducing unmanned surface vessels to patrol Singapore’s waters and detect and neutralize mines.  As informed, these vessels will be remotely controlled from shore or other naval platforms at sea.  Unmanned vessels will cut down the manpower required to operate each vessel to just two, according to the navy.  More.....
08 Mar 2018 ‘Sudden turn’ of USS John S McCain caused fatal collision
A “sudden turn” by the US Navy destroyer USS John S McCain, which put it in the path of the merchant ship Alnic MC, caused the collision between the two vessels in the Singapore Strait on August 21, 2017.  The USS John S McCain’s sudden turn was due to a series of missteps that took place after propulsion controls were transferred, Singapore’s Transport Safety Investigation Bureau said in a report.  More.....
08 Mar 2018 New Senior Naval Officer for Victoria
Commodore Greg Yorke has assumed the role Senior Naval Officer Victoria (SNO-VIC), accepting responsibilities from Commanding Officer of HMAS Cerberus Captain Tim Standen.  Captain Standen handed over a life ring signifying the transfer of responsibility of the position to Commodore Yorke in the Command Building at HMAS Cerberus.  The Senior Naval Officer Victoria is responsible for broad coordination with state government agencies and coordination with civilian bodies, furthering Navy’s interests across the state.  More.....
06 Mar 2018 New Zealand Navy frigate HMNZS Te Kaha arrives in Canada for combat system upgrade
Royal New Zealand Navy frigate HMNZS Te Kaha has arrived in Canada where she will undergo combat management system upgrades at Seaspan’s shipyard in Victoria, British Columbia.  The 25-day passage to British Columbia was marked by a brief port visit in Hawaii’s Pearl Harbor where Te Kaha and her crew represented New Zealand as part of the United States’ commemoration of Presidents’ Day.  More.....

06 Mar 2018 Sunken aircraft carrier USS Lexington located after 76 years
The wreck of one of the first US Navy aircraft carriers has been located on the floor of the Coral Sea, 500 miles off the eastern coast of Australia.  The USS Lexington was discovered 3,000 meters (about two miles) below the surface by the expedition crew of research vessel (R/V) Petrel on March 4 – 76 years after she sunk during the Battle of the Coral Sea.  As one of the first U.S. aircraft carriers ever built, the Lexington became known as “Lady Lex” and went down with 35 aircraft on board.  More.....
06 Mar 2018 Maritime sacrifice remembered in historic ceremony
One of the Royal Australian Navy’s most heroic wartime confrontations has been remembered during a solemn ceremony in Indonesia’s Sunda Strait.  On March 1st, 1942, the cruiser HMAS Perth (I), in company with USS Houston, confronted a large Japanese Naval taskforce in the entrance to the Sunda Strait. Outgunned and outnumbered, Perth courageously engaged the enemy until finally, having run out of ammunition, she was sunk.  During the action 353 men were killed or went down with Perth when she sank, 328 crew members survived only to be captured and spent the rest of the war in Prisoner of War camps, where many more died.  More.....

06 Mar 2018 HMAS Warramunga seizes eight tonnes of illicit drugs
The crew of Royal Australian Navy frigate HMAS Warramunga has intercepted two vessels and seized approximately eight tonnes of hashish valued at approximately $400 million during operations in international waters of the Arabian Sea.  Warramunga has now seized 19.5 tonnes of hashish and 1.5 tonnes of heroin, valued in excess of $1.43 billion since deploying to the Middle East in November 2017.  More.....

The Ramon Deed Veterans’ Retreat is situated just off the Silver City Highway, in Scout Road, Dareton NSW.  It is 17kms from Mildura, and 16km from Wentworth.  The Retreat is situated on 22 acres and is managed by the newly formed Committee and Members of the Wentworth & Coomealla Districts VVF Sub Branch.  All veterans, peacekeepers, peacemakers, serving and ex-service personnel, and their families are welcome to use the Retreat.  More.....

05 Mar 2018 Australian National Veterans Art Museum 'March to Art' Exhibition
All members of the NVN and their families are encouraged to pop in to the Collins Place Gallery (45 Collins Street, Melbourne) between 25 March and 25 April 2018 to view some of the extraordinary and thought-provoking artwork painted by current and former members of the Australian military forces, and their families.  This exhibition is organised by the Australian National Veterans Arts Museum (ANVAM). It is part of an ADF-wide art-based program that helps participants to recover from stress and trauma experienced during their service.  The exhibition also hopes to open up a pathway for new participants to become aware of and involved in ANVAM’s programs, while simultaneously educating the broader community about the nature and challenges of military life.
04 Mar 2018 Sleeping submariners innovative support structure
A group of Royal Australian Navy submariners have developed an innovative solution to providing temporary accommodation on board submarines.  The sailors from Fleet Support Unit - West at HMAS Stirling understood the need to replace the out-dated wooden accommodation beds currently used in the Navy’s Collins class submarines and developed the Submarine Accommodation Capsule.  The capsule was designed to be durable, practical, and interface with existing infrastructure, requiring no additional support equipment or modifications to be installed within the submarine.  More.....

Defence members across Australia, including those at sea on exercise, have taken a moment out of their busy days to celebrate Navy’s 117th birthday.  At a barbecue in Canberra, Chief of Navy Vice Admiral Tim Barrett said it was a time to celebrate the past 117 years but more importantly look to the future.  He said everyone, in uniform and in civilian roles, had a contribution to offer in an exciting time to be in Defence.  "We are on the cusp of a more capable, lethal, flexible and agile fleet that can act quickly and decisively that will meet any challenge to advance our nation.  More.....
01 Mar 2018 Navy Bridging Train remembered
One of the Royal Australian Navy’s most unusual units - the last to leave the Gallipoli Peninsula - has been recognised during a small service in Melbourne.  A new plaque recognising the 1st Royal Australian Navy Bridging Train (RANBT) was unveiled at the Shrine of Remembrance by Commanding Officer of HMAS Cerberus Captain Tim Standen and historian Dr John Carroll of the HMAS Sydney and Vietnam Logistic Support Veterans Association.  More.....
28 Feb 2018 Australian HMAS Cairns base to woo larger ships after upgrade
Royal Australian Navy base HMAS Cairns will soon be able to welcome larger naval ships, including amphibious assault ships and aircraft carriers, as it is set to benefit from a planned upgrade to the Port of Cairns.  The AUD$120 million upgrade to the Port of Cairns is closer thanks to the finalisation of the state’s consideration of the environmental impact statement for the project.  More.....

This is a Royal Australian Navy documentary and subtle recruiting film.  It details the 1973 task group deployment of HMA Ships Derwent, Perth and Supply to the Indian Ocean including port visits to Mauritius, Mombasa, Massawa (Ethiopia), Bandar Abbas (Iran) and Karachi.  It displays the diplomatic and military tasks that Australian warships undertake while deployed overseas.  (54mins)
