29 Nov 2017	SHADE: Piracy still a threat in Gulf of Aden, Indian Ocean Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) and EU Naval Forces (EU NAVFOR) welcomed delegates to the 41st Shared Awareness and De-confliction (SHADE) conference on counter-piracy in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean in Bahrain on November 22. The diversification and proliferation of wider maritime security threats in the Gulf of Aden and the Southern Red Sea, which prompted the establishment of the Maritime Security Transit Corridor (MSTC), was a focus of discussion at this year’s SHADE. 28 Nov 2017	Fugro to search for lost WW1 Australian submarine From its advanced survey vessel, the Fugro Equator, skilled survey personnel from Fugro will use a state-of-the-art multibeam echosounder to conduct a bathymetric survey and a sophisticated autonomous underwater vehicle for close examination of the search area. The expedition will be led by the not-for-profit-company Find AE1 Ltd and supported by Fugro, the Australian National Maritime Museum and the Submarine Institute of Australia. More.....
28 Nov 2017	Successful launch of Australian satellite Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, today announced the successful launch of an Australian miniature satellite from the United States. The Buccaneer cube satellite, developed by Defence and the University of New South Wales, was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on a Delta-II rocket and communications have now been established. 26 Nov 2017	Royal Navy makes history in London "The sight of sailors undertaking public duties in our capital city is a sign that the Royal Navy is back where it belongs, at the very heart of national life." First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Philip Jones Forty-eight sailors from across the Royal Navy have taken their places in history on the forecourt of Her Majesty the Queen's London residence, Buckingham Palace. Representing many branches of the Royal Navy, the Senior Service's traditional navy blue uniforms have replaced for a short period, the distinctive red tunics worn by the Foot Guards. Starting at Buckingham Palace in full show of the general public, they are also set to Mount Royal Guards at Windsor Castle, The Tower of London and St James's Palace over the next few weeks. An inconclusive action, unsatisfactory for both Germans and British, it came about because of vital changes in the naval war. The battle itself has an interesting Australian sidelight as the first occasion on which RAN College graduates saw action: present aboard HMS Glorious were five 18-year-old RAN midshipmen of the initial 1913 entry. 24 Nov 2017	Argentine Navy confirms explosion near missing submarine The Argentine Navy confirmed that an explosion occured near the position from which the missing submarine ARA San Juan last sent her position. The confirmation follows reports from November 22 which said several agencies had been investigating a so-called “hydroacoustic anomaly” which took place on November 15, around the time ARA San Juan last communicated. 24 Nov 2017	US Navy ends search for three sailors in C-2A aircraft crash The search for three missing sailors following a C-2A Greyhound crash on November 22 was ended at 10:00 am Japan Standard Time on November 24, the US Navy announced. The Grumman C-2A Greyhound, used by the navy for carrier onboard delivery, crashed at approximately 2:45 pm, Wednesday, while en route to the US aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) which was operating in the Philippine Sea. 23 Nov 2017	“Hydroacoustic anomaly” latest possible trace in search for missing Argentine submarine A new trace in the form of a “hydroacoustic anomaly” could help locate the Argentine submarine ARA San Juan which has been missing since November 15. Argentine Navy spokesman Enrique Balbi told reporters on Wednesday that the anomaly had been detected in the morning of November 15, some 30 miles north of the submarine’s last known location. 22 Nov 2017	US Navy aircraft crashes off Okinawa en route to USS Ronald Reagan A US Navy aircraft with 11 crew and passengers has crashed into the Philippine Sea southeast of Okinawa, the US 7th Fleet said in a statement. The aircraft crashed at approximately 2:45 p.m., Wednesday, while en route to the US aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) which is currently operating in the Philippine Sea. More.....

21 Nov 2017	Second Air Warfare Destroyer enters sea trials The Australian Defence Force’s second Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD), NUSHIP Brisbane, has commenced its first phase of sea trials, which will test the ship’s hull, propulsion and navigation systems. The initial trial phase, which will occur over the coming months, will be followed by a more advanced phase of sea trials next year to test the ship’s combat and communications systems. More.....

19 Nov 2017	A mystery in a bottle returned The HMAS Sydney IV whisky retrieval story has added a new chapter, with an Australian Navy memento being presented to members of the ship’s American build team. Shipbuilders the world over take great pride in the ships they produce and the team at Todd Shipyards are no exception. Unbeknownst to the Australian Navy, when the main mast of the ship was assembled in 1982 a group of workers, led by Alex Otero, placed a bottle of Canadian Whisky and a silver dollar inside the mast, hoping to bring the ship good luck. It worked. During her 32 years in commission Sydney completed two global circumnavigations as well as serving in operational theatres and training hundreds of officers and sailors. More.....
18 Nov 2017	U.S. Navy sending search and rescue assets in hunt for missing Argentinian submarine The U.S. Navy is deploying assets from the San Diego-based Undersea Rescue Command to Argentina to join in the search for the missing Argentinian navy submarine A.R.A. San Juan in the Atlantic Ocean. According to a Navy news release, a Submarine Rescue Chamber (SRC) and underwater intervention Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and trained personnel were scheduled to leave Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., on Saturday, with arrival in Argentina scheduled for Sunday. The Pressurized Rescue Module (PRM) and supporting equipment will be sent separately, to arrive on the scene early next week. More.....
18 Nov 2017	US Navy P-8A Poseidon to Support Argentina Search for Submarine U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) directed the U.S. Navy to deploy a P-8A Poseidon multi-mission maritime aircraft to Bahia Blanca, Argentina, Nov. 18, to support the South American nation's ongoing search for the submarine A.R.A. San Juan in the waters of the Southern Atlantic. The aircraft and its 21-person crew will depart El Salvador's Comalapa Air Base, where it was supporting counter-illicit trafficking maritime patrol operations. More.....
18 Nov 2017	Royal Navy patrol ship to assist in search for missing Argentine submarine The Royal Navy's HMS Protector has been deployed to join efforts to find and rescue an Argentine submarine reported missing in the South Atlantic Ocean. Following a request for assistance from the Argentine Government, the Royal Navy patrol ship immediately changed course from her planned tasking and sailed to join the multi-national efforts to find the missing submarine ARA San Juan. Drill instructors from the Army’s Guards Division have been working closely with the Royal Navy’s ceremonial instructors, as preparations at HMS Excellent in Portsmouth are under way for what will be a first for the Senior Service as they prepare to guard at Buckingham Palace, St James’s Palace, Windsor Castle and the Tower of London. 17 Nov 2017	Naming Our New Royal Australian Navy Support Ships Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, today announced the names of the Royal Australian Navy’s future support ships. The new fleet replenishment ships will be named Supply and Stalwart. Supply will be the second vessel in the Royal Australian Navy to bear the name that has its origins with the armed tender ship that accompanied the First Fleet to Australia. Stalwart is being named after two previous Australian Navy vessels, one a destroyer that served between 1920 and 1925 and the second destroyer tender served from 1968 to 1990. More.....

16 Nov 2017	Newcastle’s operations complete HMAS Newcastle has rounded out her busy six-month deployment to the Middle East, completing some ‘firsts’ and ‘lasts’ for Australian Navy ships in the region. She conducted a range of Combined Maritime Forces operations, including an attachment in support of the USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group, and trialled emerging naval capabilities. 13 Nov 2017	U.S. Air Force could face record lawsuits over mass shooting The Air Force faces many millions of dollars in potential liability for the mass shooting at a small-town church in Texas earlier this month by a former service member, legal experts say. “I think it’s almost inevitable that the Air Force will be sued,” said retired Lt. Gen. Richard Harding, former judge advocate general of the service. “And I think there’s a case that can be made, you bet.” If lawsuits against the Air Force were successful, said Don Christensen, the service’s former top prosecutor, the damages could be huge. 11 Nov 2017	$500,000 grant to help find HMAS AE1 Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, today announced the Government would match private investment to fund an expedition to search for the First World War submarine, HMAS AE1. Minister Payne said the government would provide $500,000 to allow Find AE1 Limited to proceed in its attempt to find the submarine and its crew. “HMAS AE1 is one of the world’s great maritime mysteries and this expedition will be one of the most comprehensive searches for the submarine,” Minister Payne said. 11 Nov 2017	Upgrades underway at HMAS Stirling Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Marise Payne and Senator for Western Australia Slade Brockman today welcomed the commencement of the $367 million redevelopment of Western Australian naval base HMAS Stirling. Minister Payne and Senator Brockman attended a sod-turning ceremony to officially mark the commencement of construction, which will deliver upgraded infrastructure and services to support Navy’s operations in the Indian Ocean. “HMAS Stirling is one of Australia’s most important naval bases and this investment will modernise essential infrastructure such as the wharves, power, water and security systems,’’ Minister Payne said. 10 Nov 2017	A final bid to save the world's rarest porpoise ends in heartbreak When dozens of top marine mammal experts and conservationists gathered in Mexico's Sea of Cortez last month for a last-ditch rescue effort, they knew their mission was risky. They were there to catch some of the world's last 30 vaquitas, in a bid to save the small porpoises by breeding them in captivity. 10 Nov 2017	UK eyeing Australian CEAFAR radar for future warships The UK defense ministry is considering the use of an Australian-developed radar on future Royal Navy ships. The announcement was made by UK under secretary of state for defense procurement, Harriet Baldwin during her visit to Adelaide on Friday. Baldwin said the UK would conduct a capability study to fit the CEA Technologies built ‘CEAFAR’ radar to British ships and it will begin early next year. HMAS Waller was recently able to achieve an ambitious program without losing a single day at sea thanks largely to her high performing Marine Engineering department. 07 Nov 2017	Australia participates in multilateral maritime interdiction exercise Over the period 6–7 November 2017, Royal Australian Navy (RAN) frigates, HMA Ships Parramatta and Melbourne, joined Republic of Korea (ROK) destroyer, ROKS Sejeong The Great, and US destroyer, USS Chafee to participate in a multilateral maritime interdiction exercise off the coast of Jeju, ROK. The exercise included observers from Japan, Singapore, Canada, Germany and Denmark. Commander of the Joint Task Group, Captain Jonathan Earley, RAN, said the frigates had completed their visit to the ROK as part of the Indo-Pacific Endeavour 2017 (IPE17) deployment and participated in the exercise en route to their next regional engagement. 07 Nov 2017	Revival of training capability A 20-foot shipping container on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, helps the Australian Navy run one of the world’s few remaining shore-to-sea live firing training sites. Since 1959, West Head Gunnery Range which occupies an area of 16 hectares has provided the Royal Australian Navy with live gunnery training for close range and medium calibre shipborne weapon systems, navigation radar and miscellaneous communications and support equipment. 06 Nov 2017	Navy’s WW1 history on display One hundred and three years ago, Australia’s first submarine HMAS AE1 disappeared while patrolling the seas near present-day New Guinea. No trace of the vessel or its 35 hands has ever been found. This story is now being told in a new exhibition at the Queensland Maritime Museum, War at Sea – the Navy in World War I. 03 Nov 2017	Stamped in history - women in war In the lead-up to Remembrance Day, Australia Post, with the assistance of five proud serving Australian Defence Force women, launched a ‘Women in War’ series of stamps on the steps of the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne. Officially issued on 6 October, the stamps are the fourth in a series, which commemorate a century of service since the First World War, and acknowledge the evolving role of women in war and conflict, as well as in peacekeeping efforts. 03 Nov 2017	Australia upgrading Nulka missile decoy with AU$200m boost The Australian government announced AU$200 million in funding for upgrades to the Australian-developed Nulka anti-ship missile decoy in use by the Australian and ally navies. Nulka is a rocket propelled active missile decoy designed to entice hostile radio frequency guided anti-ship missiles away from a ship. Upgrades will include a new launch system and supporting technology to enhance Nulka’s effectiveness. More.....
03 Nov 2017	HMS Enterprise scans Falklands War wrecks Royal Navy’s hydrographic survey ship HMS Enterprise recently surveyed the wrecks of Royal Navy ships lost in the Falklands War to mark the 35th anniversary of the South Atlantic conflict. HMS Coventry was scanned lying with her port side buried in the sea bed. The separated remains of HMS Antelope, which lie at a 45-degree angle on the bottom of San Carlos Water, and her sister HMS Ardent, which sank in nearby Grantham Sound after being hit by a succession of bombs, were also scanned by Enterprise and her survey launch Spitfire. 02 Nov 2017	US destroyer collisions in Pacific were avoidable, navy investigations find The two separate collisions between US Navy destroyers and commercial vessels in the Pacific in which a total of seventeen US Navy sailors lost their lives were preventable, a report released by the navy on November 1 says. The report details the events and actions that led to the collision of USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) and ACX Crystal off the coast of Japan June 17, and the collision of USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) and merchant vessel Alnic MC August 21. “Both of these accidents were preventable and the respective investigations found multiple failures by watch standers that contributed to the incidents, said Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. 02 Nov 2017	Russian submarine Veliky Novgorod launches more missiles against ISIS from the Mediterranean Russian Navy submarine Veliky Novgorod has launched more cruise missiles at ISIS positions as the Syrian Democratic Forces on Monday started an offensive on the last ISIS stronghold in Deir ez-Zor. According to the Russian defense ministry, the fifth Project 636.3 submarine to be built for the Russian Navy’s Black Sea Fleet launched a salvo of Kalibr cruise missiles from a submerged position in the Mediterranean Sea. 02 Nov 2017	Sailing in-sync with Singapore As a MRH-90 helicopter from HMAS Adelaide touched down in a deck landing practice on the flight deck of RSS Supreme, Australia’s interoperability with the Singapore Armed Forces moved to a new level. Following the deck landing practice, HMA Ships Adelaide and Darwin joined with their Singaporean Navy counterparts on Supreme in a passage exercise. Both Australian ships were in Singapore to strengthen humanitarian assistance and disaster relief interoperability with counterparts in the Singapore Armed Forces by embarking vehicles and soldiers on board Adelaide. 01 Nov 2017	US Navy forms Western Pacific fleet readiness oversight body The US Navy has established a new detachment which will help keep track of unit readiness in the US 7th Fleet. Detachment (Det) Naval Surface Group Western Pacific (NSGWP), set up by US Pacific Fleet (CPF) Commander Adm. Scott Swift on October 31, will oversee the training and certification of forward deployed surface ships with the authority to determine if a ship is ready for operations. More.....
01 Nov 2017	Grants support veterans and their communities Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan said veterans around Australia would benefit from more than $799,000 in grant funding provided to ex-service organisations for community projects. Mr Tehan said the latest round of 47 grants under the Veteran and Community Grants program would directly benefit veterans and their families. “These grants will fund a diverse range of projects and equipment that will help improve life for veterans in their communities, including upgrading facilities, improving venue accessibility and social outings,” Mr Tehan said.
