30 Aug 2017 US destroyer intercepts ballistic missile with SM-6 Dual I missiles in latest test
US Navy destroyer USS John Paul Jones fired two Standard Missile-6 (SM-6) Dual I missiles to successfully stop a medium-range ballistic missile target in the latest test.  Taking place off the coast of Hawaii on August 29, the test was designated Flight Test Standard Missile-27 Event 2 (FTM-27 E2) and marked the second time an SM-6 missile successfully intercepted a medium-range ballistic missile target.  More.....

The Royal Navy’s silent service has challenged a team of young scientists to re-envision what the future of underwater warfare would look like and the results of their work have now been revealed.  Flying fish swarm drones, completely autonomous eel-shaped UUVs and dissolving micro UUVs are all part of the concept.  The ideas were envisioned by scientists at UKNEST as part of a project to mark the 100th anniversary of the launch of the USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear powered submarine.  More.....
28 Aug 2017 USS Bonhomme Richard arrives in Melbourne for first US Navy visit in 9 years
US Navy sailors and marines aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) arrived in Melbourne, Australia, for a port visit on August 28.  The visit of the amphibious assault ship is also the first visit of a US Navy vessel to Melbourne since 2008.  During their time in Australia, US Navy sailors will experience Australian culture and take part in organized community relations events.  More.....

26 Aug 2017 First camp for children of veterans affected by mental illness
The first Kookaburra Kids Foundation camp for children of current and former Australian Defence Force (ADF) families affected by mental illness will take place this weekend.  The camp will give the children the opportunity to have fun in a supportive environment while also learning about mental illness and developing coping and resilience skills.  More than 30 children from the ACT region will participate in the camp which includes a range of activities led by qualified volunteer leaders.  More.....
26 Aug 2017 A turtle-y awesome rescue
The crew of patrol boat, HMAS Childers stuck their necks out for a marine friend when they rescued an injured green sea turtle off the coast of the Tiwi Islands recently.  During an afternoon watch, Leading Seaman Boatswains Mate Brett Paton noticed a distressed animal bobbing up and down on the surface of the ocean.  On closer inspection, Leading Seaman Paton discovered a turtle with a deep gash to its shell, the injury preventing it from diving.  More.....
25 Aug 2017 US Navy recovers second missing USS John S. McCain sailor
The US Navy has found the second of ten USS John S. McCain sailors who went missing following a collision on Monday.  On Thursday night, U.S Navy and Marine Corps divers recovered and identified remains of 26-year-old USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) sailor, Electronics Technician 3rd Class Dustin Louis Doyon, of Connecticut.  More divers and equipment arrived overnight to continue search and recovery operations for eight missing sailors inside flooded compartments of the ship.  More.....

24 Aug 2017 US Navy identifies 1 of 10 missing USS John S. McCain sailors as search is suspended
The US Navy’s 7th Fleet announced it is suspending the search efforts for US Navy sailors reported missing after a collision between US destroyer USS John S. McCain and a commercial tanker on Monday.  The navy said it discovered the remains of one sailor while the other nine are still missing.  US and regional navies spent more than 80 hours searching for the missing sailors in an approximately 2,100-square mile area east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore.  More.....

Royal Navy divers have placed a Royal Navy flag on the UK’s first purpose-built aircraft carrier HMS Hermes for the first time in 75 years.  Three quarters of a century after she was sunk by Japanese bombers on April 9, 1942, a ten-strong team of Royal Navy divers paid their respects on the battered hull of the Hermes.  More.....
23 Aug 2017 US Navy relieves 7th Fleet commander after latest collision
The US Navy has relieved the 7th Fleet commander of his duties after the latest in a spate of US warship collisions in the Pacific.  Adm. Scott Swift, commander of U.S. Pacific Fleet, on Tuesday removed three-star admiral Joseph Aucoin from his position after the USS John S. McCain collided with oil tanker Alnic MC on Monday.  Rear Adm. Phil Sawyer, who has already been nominated and confirmed for the position and promotion to Vice Adm., will assume command immediately.  More.....
22 Aug 2017 Remains of some sailors found in flooded USS John S. McCain compartments
Remains of an unidentified number of US Navy sailors have been found in the flooded USS John S. McCain compartments, US Navy Adm. Scott Swift said Tuesday. Speaking to reporters at Singapore’s Changi Naval Base, where the US destroyer docked after a collision with an oil tanker, Swift further said that during search efforts at sea the Royal Malaysian Navy located another body. Authorities are working to determine whether it is one of the missing sailors.
22 Aug 2017 Royal Malaysian Navy launching first SGPV/LCS frigate
The Royal Malaysian Navy announced that it is launching the country’s first littoral combat ship (LCS) in a ceremony on August 24 in Lumut.  The vessel will bear pennant number 2501 and will reportedly be named KD Maharaja Lela.  Also referred to as Second Generation Patrol Vessels, the six ships in the class are being built by Malaysian shipbuilder Boustead Holdings Berhad under a contract with the Malaysian defense ministry from July 2014.  More.....
22 Aug 2017 US Navy halts operations worldwide as search for 10 missing sailors continues
As the search for the 10 missing USS John S. McCain sailors continues, the US chief of naval operations has ordered a pause in navy operations worldwide in order for fleet commanders to “assess practices”.  US Navy Adm. John Richardson directed the navy to take an “operational pause” in all of its fleets around the world, to allow fleet commanders to assess and review with their commands the fundamental practice to safe and effective operations.  He said he envisions the pause lasting “one to two days,” but said he is leaving the specifics to the fleet commanders.  More.....

Navy’s sailors and officers have a new and improved war-fighting tool in the form of the humble pocket notebook with important information at the fingertips, saving time and effort.  An initial run of 2,000 notebooks is being ‘sea tested’ across the Fleet as part of a micro-innovation initiative.  While this is a digital age, often the simplest solutions are the best and for life-at-sea the pocket-sized notebook is king when computers are often in short supply.  More.....
22 Aug 2017 Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse
Defence welcomes today’s release of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse Report on Case Study 40.  Case Study 40 examined both historical and contemporary complaints and cases of child sexual abuse in the ADF, with a focus on Navy’s former Junior Recruit Training Establishment at HMAS Leeuwin, the Army Apprentices School at Balcombe, and Australian Defence Force Cadet organisations from 2000 to present.  Throughout this important inquiry Defence had been assisting the Royal Commission and fully supports its objectives to safeguard children.  More.....
21 Aug 2017 HMS Victory: Preserving the world’s oldest commissioned warship
As part of what contractor BAE Systems described as the most extensive restoration project the 252-year-old HMS Victory underwent following her repair after the Battle of Trafalgar, the world’s oldest commissioned warship will receive a new structural support system for the ship.  Specialist engineers from BAE Systems are collaborating with the National Museum of the Royal Navy on the unique project to help preserve HMS Victory.  More.....
21 Aug 2017 US destroyer USS John S. McCain collides with merchant ship near Strait of Malacca
US Navy destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) collided with a merchant ship while underway east of Singapore and the Strait of Malacca on August 21.  According to the US Navy, ten sailors are missing and five are injured after the guided-missile destroyer collided with oil tanker Alnic MC.  Four of the injured were medically evacuated by a Republic of Singapore Navy Puma helicopter to a hospital in Singapore for non-life threatening injuries.  The fifth injured sailor does not require further medical attention, the navy said.  More.....
21 Aug 2017 That which shall not be named in anti-submarine warfare: identifying friend and foe
The 2016 Defence White Paper, the Naval Shipbuilding Plan, and associated statements by political figures such as Prime Minister Turnbull and Defence Industry Minister Pyne have all advocated the need for enhanced anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).  The impetus for this mooted rediscovery of ASW is the understanding that by 2030 over half the world’s submarines will be operating in the Asia–Pacific.  More.....

Australia’s surface warships and submarines will, in future, be much more closely linked to allied vessels to provide a collective defence against increasingly lethal threats, Royal Australian Navy chief Tim Barrett tells The Strategist.  Discussing options and capabilities the revitalised fleet will bring, Vice Admiral Barrett says surface warships provide a meaningful visible presence in, for instance, protecting trade routes.  ‘A navy must be able to demonstrate presence but also be capable of engaging and operating with others in the region—not just those you might consider to be future adversaries, but all others.’  More.....
20 Aug 2017 Researchers find wreck of World War II cruiser USS Indianapolis
Billionaire and philanthropist Paul G. Allen and his researcher team have found the wreck of the famed World War II cruiser USS Indianapolis, which was lost on July 30, 1945.  The cruiser was found in the Philippine Sea, more than 18,000 feet below the surface, with the number 35 on the hull as a first confirmation.  Around 800 of the ship’s 1,196 Sailors and Marines survived the sinking, but after four to five days in the water – suffering exposure, dehydration, drowning, and shark attacks – only 316 survived.  More.....
19 Aug 2017 Cyclone Tracy survivor tells of HMAS Arrow's deadly sprint back to Darwin wharf
Robert Dagworthy was captain of the attack-class patrol boat HMAS Arrow when Cyclone Tracy decimated Darwin in 1974.  Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin in the early hours of Christmas morning, almost entirely destroying the city.  Of the 66 people killed, 53 were on land and 13 at sea.  Two of those were Mr Dagworthy's men.  "We were told there was a small cyclone tracking towards Darwin but [that it] would probably pass close by," Mr Dagworthy said.  More.....
19 Aug 2017 Submariner memorial dedication and 50 years of submarines
Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, joined Rear Admiral Mike Noonan, Deputy Chief of the Navy, and veterans to dedicate a memorial on the site of ex-HMAS Platypus, Australia’s decommissioned east coast submarine base, honouring all who have died while serving in Australian submarines.  The ceremony also marked 50 years since the re-establishment of the Australian submarine capability in 1967.  “For the past 50 years, since we re-established the Australian Submarine Squadron, the silent service has been dedicated to duty,” Minister Payne said.  More.....
18 Aug 2017 US Navy: USS Fitzgerald leadership responsible for collision
Following a thorough investigation into the June 17 collision between destroyer USS Fitzgerald and a commercial tanker, the US Navy has determined that the destroyer’s poor leadership is responsible for the collision.  On August 18, the commanding officer, executive officer and command master chief of the guided-missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) were relieved of their duties by Vice Adm. Joseph Aucoin, Commander, Seventh Fleet, while a number of officer and enlisted watch standers were held accountable.  More.....
17 Aug 2017 Anzac Portal brings Australia's war history to life
Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Mr Dan Tehan today encouraged Australians to visit The Anzac Portal website after a recent renovation.  The Anzac Portal website at http://www.anzacportal.dva.gov.au/  aims to promote awareness of Australia’s wartime history. Mr Tehan said the portal now contained information and educational resources spanning campaigns from the First World War to contemporary military and peacekeeping operations.  More.....

15 Aug 2017 ADF Remuneration in focus
A new workplace remuneration arrangement for Australian Defence Force members that contains a six percent salary increase over three years is being prepared to be implemented when the current arrangement expires on 1 November this year.  Director Military Remuneration, Group Captain Jay Clarke said it was designed to be fair, reasonable and affordable and, most importantly, there would be no trade-off of conditions of service to fund the proposition.  More.....

Minster for Defence Personnel Dan Tehan today launched a website for current and former ADF members that is a central hub of information about free support and services.  Mr Tehan said the Engage ‘Supporting Those Who Serve’ website would help all current and former ADF members, their families and those involved in their support, by providing easily accessible information.  More.....

The Royal Australian Navy is forging ahead with new technologies to counter the threat of sea mines to military and commercial vessels.  The Head of Navy Capability, Rear Admiral Jonathan Mead, said the prevalence and increasing sophistication of sea mines means the Royal Australian Navy must continue to improve the way it finds and disposes of these mines.  More.....
11 Aug 2017 Navy's Minehunters Service Life Extension Reaches First Pass
The Australian Government has granted First Pass approval to extend the service life for Navy’s Huon Class Minehunter Coastal vessels.  The Head of Navy Capability, Rear Admiral Jonathan Mead, said the project forecast in the Defence White Paper 2016 will ensure Defence is able to provide an effective maritime mine countermeasure capability out to the 2030s.  “Minehunters play a vital role in protecting Australia’s ships, harbours and infrastructure from the threat of sea mines,” Rear Admiral Mead said.  More.....
10 Aug 2017 $4m for veterans helping veterans
Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan today announced almost $4 million in Government funding for essential advice, advocacy and welfare services for veterans, serving members and their families, war widows and widowers.  “The Building Excellence in Support and Training (BEST) grants program will support 142 ex-service organisations (ESOs) across Australia to continue providing help and advice to the veteran community,” Mr Tehan said.  More.....
10 Aug 2017 BAE Systems submits bid for Australian frigate build
Shipbuilder and defence contractor BAE Systems on Thursday announced it has officially submitted its bid for the construction of Australia’s nine SEA 5000 Future Frigates.  The company, however, did not reveal the cost of designing and building the frigates in Australia.  What is known is that the frigate design will be based on the Type 26 global combat ship which already started construction in the UK.  More.....
10 Aug 2017 Information Warfare Force established
An important step in delivering Navy’s future warfare effects was achieved in Sydney on 1 July with the establishment of a specific organisation to focus on information warfare.  The Information Warfare Force will bring together a number of existing groups with the aim to further develop Navy’s ability to operate in the fast-changing world of information transmission and technology.  The inaugural Commander Information Warfare, Commodore Braddon Wheeler has been responsible for developing the role of the Force.  More.....

The Royal Australian Navy has remembered the loss of HMAS Canberra (I) with a commemorative service over her final resting place in waters off the Solomon Islands.  As part of a series of commemorations for the battles at Guadalcanal, Navy personnel from HMAS Success, along with a detachment from the current HMAS Canberra, paid their respects at sea, laying wreaths over the wreck in memory of the lives lost on both sides of the Battle of Savo Island.  More.....
09 Aug 2017 Royal Navy Wildcat helicopter uncovers drug plantations on Montserrat
A reconnaissance mission flown by a Royal Navy Wildcat over the tiny Caribbean island of Montserrat has uncovered nine illegal drug plantations in the island’s forbidden zone.  Naval aviators revisited the town of Plymouth on the island, 20 years after it was destroyed by a volcano eruption.  Half the island was abandoned back in 1997 when the volcano erupted, mud and lava swallowed much of the Montserrat capital Plymouth.  More.....
08 Aug 2017 US, British aircraft carriers meet off Scotland
Two aircraft carriers, one operational since 2009 and the other preparing for its commissioning ceremony, met off the coast of Scotland during the UK-hosted exercise Saxon Warrior.  HMS Queen Elizabeth met up with the USS George HW Bush and her carrier strike group during a series of war games which have seen the Commander of the UK Carrier Strike Group, Commodore Andrew Betton, and his team direct jets, firepower and personnel across the task group for the last ten days to ensure readiness for the UK’s own carrier strike capability.  More.....
08 Aug 2017 Australia, Papua New Guinea start exercise Paradise
Naval forces from Australia and Papua New Guinea have kicked off the bilateral maritime exercise Paradise off the coast of Darwin with patrol boat crews from both countries meeting at Australian Navy base HMAS Coonawarra.  Australian exercise director, Commander Alex Hawes said this year’s iteration promised to be one of the most challenging with a busy schedule of combined navigation, boarding and live fire exercises planned.  More.....
08 Aug 2017 Training increase no challenge for innovative team
Navy personnel at the West Head Gunnery School in Victoria have been praised for their innovation to resolve an issue that could have arisen as the Royal Australian Navy’s shipbuilding program gathers pace.  The Gunnery Range Management Team is responsible for the coordination of gunnery training across the Fleet and Officer-In-Charge, Lieutenant Commander Peter Arnold, said conducting training activities was becoming increasingly difficult.  “This was because of new ships joining the Fleet with more complex weapon systems,” Lieutenant Commander Arnold said.  More.....
07 Aug 2017 Australian Navy ship locates crashed US Marine Osprey
A Royal Australian Navy vessel has located the MV-22 Osprey aircraft which crashed in Shoalwater Bay on Saturday leaving three marines missing and presumed dead.  The Australian defense ministry on Monday announced that survey ship HMAS Melville located the aircraft.  Preparations are now underway for dive teams to recover the submerged aircraft. Recovery operations using a remote operating vehicle will start on Monday evening.  More.....
07 Aug 2017 Australia’s first air warfare destroyer heads for commissioning site
Some two months after being officially delivered to the Australian defense ministry in Adelaide, Royal Australian Navy’s first air warfare destroyer Hobart has set sail for its commissioning site in Sydney.  According to The Advertiser, the future HMAS Hobart is set to be commissioned in a ceremony in Sydney on September 23.  More.....
07 Aug 2017 Australian Navy picks Cubic for simulation drills assistance
The Royal Australian Navy has selected Cubic Global Defense to develop and deliver simulation-enabled training events to its forces.  The four-year contract, valued at approximately USD $7.11 million or AUD $9 million, provides a range of simulation planning, technical support and professional interactors to enhance RAN’s multisite synthetic training events at the Navy Synthetic Warfighting Centre (NSWC).  More.....

The Australian Government is committed to a stand-alone Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA).  This has been an election commitment by the Coalition over successive elections and remains Government policy.  There are no plans to merge DVA with the Department of Human Services (DHS).  There is no meeting planned for this week and there is no agreement to be signed in the near future to subsume DVA into DHS.  More.....
07 Aug 2017 US admiral and RAN Chief: nuclear submarines require massive backup
For Australia to operate a fleet of nuclear submarines would require great resources and incur a huge expense, says United States Pacific Fleet commander Scott Swift.  Any country pursuing nuclear-powered vessels, ships, aircraft carriers or submarines should go down that path with a full understanding of the costs involved, Admiral Swift said during a recent visit to Canberra.  ‘It’s very, very expensive to sustain nuclear-powered vessels’, he said.  ‘There’s a significant infrastructure requirement and a significant safety requirement.’  More.....
06 Aug 2017 US military plane crash: search for missing crew in Queensland turns to 'recovery effort'
Three marines lost after a US military aircraft crashed off the Queensland coast are not believed to have survived, and the mission to find them has become a salvage and recovery effort, the US Marine Corps says.  The MV-22 Osprey aircraft was involved in a “mishap” at about 4pm Saturday while conducting exercises off Shoalwater Bay near Rockhampton, where the biennial Talisman Sabre joint US and Australian military training exercise is under way.  Twenty-three of the 26 marines on board were rescued within an hour, while the search for the missing crew members continued throughout the night and into Sunday morning.  More.....
05 Aug 2017 Bottle in ship causes a stir
A small bottle of whisky, recovered from the base of ex-HMAS Sydney IV’s mast during its scrapping in mid-June, has caused quite a stir in naval circles.  The Adelaide class frigate was towed to Western Australia in May to be recycled by Birdon Pty Ltd.  As news of Sydney’s fate reached former employees of Todd Pacific Shipyards in Seattle, a comment on social media alerted those scrapping her to the presence of a small bottle of whisky builders had placed in the base of one of the legs of her mast.  More.....
05 Aug 2017 Carving history in her honour
In a small country town, an hour from Melbourne, American-born sculptor Richard Yates is making his mark on the Australian Navy’s new fleet of destroyers, hand carving the battle honour boards for the future HMA Ships Hobart, Brisbane and Sydney.  With a combination of angle grinders and hand-held rotary tools, Mr Yates spends more than 300 hours carving out the foundations of the boards, before finishing the boards with sandpaper, stain, paint and lacquer.  More.....

03 Aug 2017 Teaming for operational training
HMAS Newcastle’s boarding party has trained with the United States Coast Guard during the ship’s first port visit while deployed in the Middle East.  Australian personnel completed a five-day course delivered by the Coast Guard at the Naval Support Activity in Bahrain which was supported by Naval Criminal Investigative Service agents.  The training covered the latest in search techniques and the use of specialist search equipment, giving Newcastle’s boarding party the means to find any hidden cargo when boarding suspect vessels.  The NCIS training focused on investigation techniques and the collection of evidence.  More.....
01 Aug 2017 USS Nimitz starts ISIS strikes from the Persian Gulf
F/A-18 jets from the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Nimitz have started flying sorties from the Persian Gulf targeting ISIS positions in Iraq and Syria.  This is the first time the carrier and ships from its carrier strike group are supporting operation Inherent Resolve, the coalition fight against ISIS, since deploying from Naval Base Kitsap on June 1 this year.  More.....
01 Aug 2017 Microgrid construction begins at Garden Island
The Government welcomes the commencement of construction of an integrated solar and battery storage microgrid at HMAS Stirling, by Carnegie Clean Energy.  This facility, in conjunction with the desalination plant already built by Carnegie on the island, will supply power and water to the naval base.  More.....

As part of a recruitment initiative to broaden the Naval Police workforce, Navy members will now be seeing Able Seamen on the beat.  Able Seaman Naval Police Coxswain Nichole Stephenson is fresh out of training after initially joining the Navy to be a Cryptographic Linguist.  She is one of four Able Seamen who are now part of the team that helps uphold the discipline of the Services.  More.....

More often thought of as what powers aircraft traversing the skies, the gas turbine is also what gives many Australian Navy ships their get up and go.  For maintainers of those gas turbines, training is on the improve.  Gas turbines are used in Adelaide and Anzac class frigates, and in both Canberra class amphibious ships, but until recently, maintainers didn’t have a training environment ashore that was real-to-life.  More.....
