31 Jul 2015 A fond farewell to HMAS Tobruk
The Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove, AK, MC (Retd), together with the Assistant Minister for Defence Stuart Robert, MP, and Chief of Navy Vice Admiral Tim Barrett, AO, CSC, RAN, today attended the decommissioning of HMAS Tobruk to bid the ship a fond farewell in Sydney.  More.....

25 Jul 2015 Navy Week "Geoffrey Evans" Trophy Race
The Navy League of Australia -VIC-TAS Division will, with the support of the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria, be holding its annual Navy Week "Geoffrey Evans" trophy race on Saturday 24 October at 1400. The race is open to yachties in Port Phillip.  Full details in the "Navy Week Victoria" page.

23 Jul 2015 Australian Government gifts landing craft to the Philippines
Chief of Navy Vice Admiral Tim Barrett, AO, CSC, RAN, was joined at HMAS Cairns today by his Philippine counterpart, Flag Officer in Command Philippine Navy, Vice Admiral Jesus Millan, at a ceremony to gift two decommissioned Australian Balikpapan class landing craft to the Government of the Philippines.  More.....
21 Jul 2015 WILD footy in South Africa
During HMAS Anzac’s recent visit to South Africa, members of ship’s company participated in a clinic with junior AFL players in the township of Khayelitsha, just outside of Cape Town.  Footy WILD, the brand name for AFL South Africa, has been funded by the AFL since 2005, and currently has 25,000 registered members from age seven, and a regular competition with eight senior teams from around the nation.  More.....

Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Tim Barrett, recently returned from a successful visit to London, where he addressed the Royal College of Defence Studies on the topic of Maritime Power in the twenty-first century.  Vice Admiral Barrett emphasised the requirement for a nation to defend itself and to promote vital security and economic interests.  More.....

16 Jul 2015 Royal Australian Navy returns to Fiji
The first Royal Australian Navy ship to visit Fiji since 2006 has completed a six-day port visit to Suva.  Commanding Officer HMAS Leeuwin, Lieutenant Commander Richard Mortimer says his ship’s company of 65 have been working alongside the Defence Forces of Fiji.  “While in Suva, we conducted joint training with the Republic of Fiji Navy, concentrating on hydrography and navigation skills as well as damage control."  More.....
15 Jul 2015 Invictus Games host city announced
Assistant Minister for Defence Stuart Robert today welcomed the announcement by His Royal Highness Prince Harry that the 2016 Invictus Games will be held in Orlando, Florida between 8-12 May.  The Invictus Games is an international adaptive multi-sport competition for serving and former serving wounded, injured or ill military personnel.  The 2014 Invictus Games in London attracted more than 400 athletes from 14 countries including Australia.  More.....

In the last newsletter, I let you know that the WA Museum had promised to prepare and release a small selection of the imagery obtained in April/May exclusively for the families and that it would probably take the project team a little time.  This remains the situation as the WA Museum is still occupied with the laborious task of getting the very large image files organised.  More.....
13 Jul 2015 Reserve pay changes bring alignment
From 2 July Reserve members will have access to the same salary increment structure as their permanent Navy colleagues after the Defence Force Remuneration Tribunal approved the Australian Defence Force pay case on 30 June.  The decision means that eligible Reserve members at the ranks of Leading Seaman, Petty Officer, Sub Lieutenant, Lieutenant, Lieutenant Commander and Commander (and Army and Air Force equivalents) will have access to additional increments for future salary advancement.  More.....

09 Jul 2015 Delay in payment of certain Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation pensions
The Government is aware of issues currently affecting the payment of some Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation (CSC) pensions, including Defence Force Retirement and Death Benefits (DFRDB) and Military Superannuation and Benefits Scheme (MSBS) pensions.
As the responsible agency CSC have confirmed it actioned payments in the normal manner and the problem appears to relate to the distribution of funds by Westpac to other financial institutions where pensioners have accounts.
Resolving this problem is the priority for CSC, which is working with Westpac to rectify the issue as soon as possible.
Members of the DFRDB or MSBS concerned about the payment of their pension are encouraged to call the CSC helpline on 1300 006 727 or visit the CSC website at www.csc.gov.au.
08 Jul 2015 Australian Navy drug seizures top $2.3 billion in two years
In its sixth successful haul in eight weeks, Royal Australian Navy frigate HMAS Newcastle seized 139kg of heroin, with an estimated street value of around $AUD 41 million, off the East coast of Africa.  Under the auspices of the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), the latest haul brings the Australian Navy’s total seizures in the Middle East region over the last two years to an estimated street value of $AUD 2.3 billion.  More.....
08 Jul 2015 Release of Defence Firefighters’ health study
Monash University today published the results of the Defence Firefighters’ Health Study, which examined the incidences of death and cancer in current and former ADF firefighters, the majority of whom served in the Air Force.  The study found the death rate among ADF firefighters was significantly lower than the age-matched Australian population and that the rates of cancer were about the same.  More.....
07 Jul 2015 HMAS Anzac visits South Africa
The Royal Australian Navy’s helicopter frigate HMAS Anzac has arrived in Cape Town as part of her NORTHERN TRIDENT 2015 deployment.  Anzac departed Sydney in March and has transited the Southern Ocean, Indian Ocean, the Red Sea, Suez Canal, the Mediterranean Sea and the North and South Atlantic en route to Cape Town.  More.....
07 Jul 2015 Medal Replacement - Letter from Senator Zed Seselja
Prior to 2003 lost, stolen or destroyed medals could only be replaced directly to the individual who earned them. ln 2003, this policy was extended, allowing replacement when deceased individuals' service awards were lost in specified natural disasters. ln December 2014, the Hon Darren Chester MP Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence agreed to a revision of this policy, which now allows for the medals of deceased individuals to be replaced in the following circumstance:  More.....

04 Jul 2015 Perth and Sirius conduct North West Shelf patrol
On returning to Australia after a south-east Asian deployment, HMAS Perth joined HMAS Sirius to conduct a security patrol of Western Australia’s North West Shelf.  As part of the 'Northern Shield' mission, Navy continues to contribute to the Government’s maritime security arrangements to the region.  More.....

03 Jul 2015 Desert Mounted Corps Memorial in Albany Declared a Military Memorial of National Significance
The Desert Mounted Corps Memorial in Albany, Western Australia, was today declared a Military Memorial of National Significance by the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Senator the Hon. Michael Ronaldson.  The memorial commemorates the men of the Australian Light Horse, as well as the New Zealand Mounted Rifles, the Imperial Camel Corps and the Australian Flying Corps who served in Egypt, Palestine and Syria during the First World War between 1916 and 1918.  More.....
