The Naval Commemorative Committee Victoria, invite all serving ADF personnel, Australian and Allied Veterans along with family and friends, to attend the ANZAC Naval Commemorative Ball on Saturday 17 October 2015 at Etihad Stadium, Melbourne.  Dance to the Music of the RAN Dance Band.  The Ball is open to all serving and former members of the ADF, NZDF, Reserves, Cadets, families, friends, Police, Emergency Services, our Allies and the General Public.

29 Jan 2015 Easier Access to Mental Health Support for Veterans
The Abbott Government has made it easier for veterans to access mental health support under new arrangements announced today.  Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Senator the Hon. Michael Ronaldson said tackling the mental health challenges for veterans and their families was a key priority in the Abbott Government’s plan for improving services for Australia’s service men and women.  More.....

27 Jan 2015 Navy Tall Ship STS Young Endeavour Rounds Cape Horn
The Royal Australian Navy operated Sail Training Ship Young Endeavour rounded Cape Horn on Australia Day, 36 days into a 12-month circumnavigation of the world.  Chief of Navy Vice Admiral Tim Barrett AO, CSC, RAN congratulated the 36 seafarers on board the square-rigged tall ship, including 12 Royal Australian Navy crew and 24 alumni crew specially selected for the passage.  More.....

From 21 January to 20 February 2015, DVA is undertaking community consultation regarding the delivery of in-person services at the standalone Veterans’ Access Network (VAN) shopfronts at Tweed Heads in NSW and Geelong in Victoria.  The VAN is DVA’s major first point of contact for handling enquiries from the veteran and general community.  It helps people understand and access the services available to them.  More.....

14 Jan 2015 Russia’s stealth ‘black hole’ submarine prepares for trials
A NEW Russian advanced stealth submarine, dubbed a “black hole” by NATO for its ability to be undetectable, has begun preparations for deep water tests. However, it must first make a 4,630km journey to the Barents Sea in Russia’s north.  More.....

12 Jan 2015 Sydney Emden 100 Commemorations
Between Friday 7th and Tuesday 11th November 2014, the Cocos Keeling Islands hosted the 'Weekend of Commemorations' for the 100 year anniversary of 'The Battle of Cocos'. On 9 November 1914 the HMAS Sydney I defeated the German raider SMS Emden, this was Australia's first naval battle victory.  View the video on YouTube.....

CHINA, Australia and possibly Thailand are planning to increase, replace or incorporate modern submarines to their fleets according to reports from Asia-Pacific countries.  In the case of China they are expected to be nuclear-powered attack subs armed with ballistic missiles and should be operational by 2020.  More.....
07 Jan 2015 Department shift opens door to hundreds of claims by veterans

Hundreds of military veterans denied compensation for injury or illness could take legal action against the federal government, after it quietly stopped using a private research company to investigate veterans’ cases. The Australian revealed last year that the company, Writeway Research Service, was involved in a commonwealth investigation over the use of an allegedly forged document to challenge one service - woman’s case.  More.....

03 Jan 2015 Bushfire threat to HMAS Cerberus abated | Defence Media Release
Due to the threat of bushfire in the Crib Point area of Victoria, all non-essential personnel were evacuated from HMAS Cerberus at 3:45pm Saturday, 3 January.  The threat to the base has now abated and staff were permitted to return from 6.30pm.

Personnel from HMAS Cerberus are assisting the Country Fire Authority and Victorian Police in dealing with the fire and Navy will continue to monitor the situation.

I would like to share with shipmates a memorable experience for me that was a focal point of a recent cruise I undertook to Cape York. This was to locate and then dive the wreck of the Bathurst class corvette, HMAS Warnambool.  The sinking of Warnambool occurred on 13 September, 1947, while she was clearing mines in the vicinity of Cockburn Reef, in company with sister ship Swan.  More.....

Leading Seaman Boatswains Mate Shaun Murphy hopes he can with the support of his Navy colleagues, friends, family and the public.  Leading Seaman Murphy has had a story floating inside his head for a very long time and like many of us, he thought it was just a ‘project’ to be tinkered with when he had time outside his day job with Navy. He is now trying to raise funds to publish his first novel, one in the fantasy-genre.  More.....

Ten days into a twelve month circumnavigation of the world, STS Young Endeavour’s captain, Lieutenant Commander Gavin Dawe, and crew have sailed the ship more than 1,500 nautical miles from Sydney.  They are currently charting a course to South America, where they are expected to round Cape Horn before visiting Argentina and Brazil.  More.....

On 15 December 2014, building on earlier Budget measures, the Government announced a third tranche of Smaller Government reform which relates to the streamlining of government bodies.  For DVA, this means around 20 advisory groups in the health, research and commemorations areas will either cease, sunset, merge with new arrangements, or be subject to review.  More.....
22 Dec 2014 Young Endeavour sets sail on world voyage
The Royal Australian Navy operated Sail Training Ship Young Endeavour set sail from Sydney today for a 12-month voyage, circumnavigating the globe. Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence, Darren Chester, attended the departure from Fleet Base East, and spoke with members of the Royal Australian Navy crew and the 24 young Australians who will sail the ship on the first leg, to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  More.....
