25 Sep 2012 VALE: Jim Rushton - 11.03.1912 - 10.09.2012
Ex-Shipwright Jim Rushton passed away peacefully on 10th September 2012. Jim was an ex-crew member of the ill-fated HMAS Goorangai, a minesweeper that sank in less than a minute on 20th November 1940, after being accidentally cut in two by MV Duntroon. It was the first RAN vessel lost in World War II and the first RAN service vessel to be lost in wartime. The Goorangai sank with the loss of all hands - three officers and 21 sailors - but Jim was on shore leave. The seaman who replaced him on this final voyage was a married man with three children, and this deeply affected Jim for the rest of his life. The Queenscliff Maritime Museum hold an annual memorial service for those lost in the sinking, on November 18, at the cairn erected at The Bluff near the Queenscliff Fort.
