The crew of HMAS Launceston has watched on closely as the Armidale Class Patrol Boat was lowered back into the water in the synchro lift at HMAS Coonawarra, having spent more than two months in the dry dock conducting planned maintenance in Darwin, under the guidance of Thales Australia.  More.....
28 Feb 2020 Pacific Fleet orders at least 14-day underways for ships visiting nations in 7th Fleet AOR as coronavirus spreads
U.S. Pacific Fleet commander Adm. John C. “Lung” Aquilino has directed all vessels visiting nations in the 7th Fleet area of operations “to remain at sea for at least 14 days before pulling into another port in order to monitor sailors for any symptoms" of COVID-19, a new and deadly strain of the coronavirus.  More.....
28 Feb 2020 People's Liberation Army Navy lased a U.S. Navy P-8A in unsafe, unprofessional manner
A U.S. Navy P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft was lased by People’s Republic of China (PRC) navy destroyer 161 on Feb. 17 while flying in airspace above international waters approximately 380 miles west of Guam.  The P-8A was operating in international airspace in accordance with international rules and regulations. The PRC navy destroyer’s actions were unsafe and unprofessional.  More.....

Waving crowds packed Liverpool’s waterfront to welcome aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales in her first historic visit to the city today.  The second of the UK’s giant new aircraft carriers sailed has sailed along the River Mersey for a week-long visit packed with celebrations and engagement with the local community.  More.....

In a moving ceremony Navy’s final Air Warfare Destroyer, NUSHIP Sydney, has been officially handed over to Defence.  NUSHIP Sydney is the final of the three ships being delivered by the Air Warfare Destroyer Alliance which includes the Department of Defence, Raytheon Australia, and ASC Shipbuilding supported by Navantia Australia.  More.....

The Washington-based Center for Strategic and Budgetary Analysis recently released a thought-provoking assessment of the US Navy’s plan for its surface forces. Taking back the seas: transforming the US surface fleet for decision-centric warfare is an important contribution to the naval debate.  While it accepts many of the underlying principles of the US Navy’s force structure proposals, the study puts forward several major modifications, some of which may be relevant to allied navies seeking to transform in a fast-changing technological environment.  More.....

24 Feb 2020 Japan assumes command of Combined Task Force 151
For the fourth time since 2013, Japan has taken command of Combined Task Force (CTF) 151 at a short ceremony at Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) headquarters in Bahrain, relieving the Kuwait Navy of their duties.  Since taking command from the Republic of Korea Navy in October last year, Captain Khaled Alkandari and his team have led CTF 151 through a number of key leader engagement events, focused operations and counter-piracy activities.  More.....

Lieutenant Hannah Phelps has one of the more interesting weather forecasting jobs in the Navy, providing meteorological support at Casey research station, Antarctica, for Operation SOUTHERN DISCOVERY during this austral summer period.  During her deployment to Casey, Lieutenant Phelps is working alongside other forecasters from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).  More.....

More than 330 future Australian Defence Force (ADF) leaders have today been formally welcomed to the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) at the annual Chief of Defence Force (CDF) Parade.  The latest group of Royal Australian Navy midshipmen, Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force officer cadets were put through their paces on the ADFA Parade Ground, in front of the reviewing officer, the Chief of Defence Force, General Angus Campbell, AO, DSC.  More.....

22 Feb 2020 Fighting force forms up for FCP
In a demonstration of maritime combat power, four Royal Australian Navy warships formed off Australia’s East Coast to conduct a tactical transit in the opening stages of Fleet Certification Period 2020 (FCP20).  The formation signaled the start of the sea phase of FCP20, which is the Royal Australian Navy’s first major training exercise for the year and focuses on mid-intensity high-end warfighting.  More.....

21 Feb 2020 Russian Navy’s 2nd Project 22350 frigate continues testing in Barents Sea
On February 20, 2020, the Russian Navy frigate of Project 22350, Admiral Flota Kasatonov, entered the Barents Sea to continue the test program.  In the Northern Fleet combat training grounds, the new frigate will work out maneuvering, testing systems and mechanisms, the Russian defense ministry said.  More.....
21 Feb 2020 JFD Australia, Royal Australian Navy extend contract for submarine rescue system supply
James Fisher’s Perth-based business, JFD Australia, will continue to supply its submarine rescue system to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) for at least the next four years.  The company has been awarded a GBP 35 million (USD 45.2 million) contract extension with the Australian government to deliver its submarine escape and rescue system until December 2023 with an option to further extend to November 2024.  More.....
21 Feb 2020 Navy provides survey support in Antarctica
Nine members of the Maritime Geospatial Warfare Unit recently sailed to Australia’s Davis research station in Antarctica on RSV Aurora Australis to begin survey operations as part of the Davis Aerodrome project.  The team will conduct survey operations to identify potential sites to land construction equipment and materials for a proposed all-seasons, paved runway near Davis station.  More.....

Captain Hector ‘Hec’ MacDonald Laws Waller DSC & Bar RAN

Hector Macdonald Laws (Hec) Waller was born on 4 April 1900 at Benalla, Victoria, the youngest of ten children of William Frederick Waller, storekeeper, and his wife Helen, née Duncan.  Hec was educated at the Benalla Higher Elementary School and was appointed as a cadet midshipman in the Royal Australian Navy in early 1914.  He entered the RAN College, Osborne House, Geelong (relocated at Jervis Bay, Federal Capital Territory, in 1915).  Chief Cadet Captain in his final year, he was awarded the King’s Gold Medal on graduating in 1917.  On 1 January 1918 he was promoted Midshipman.  Full story on our Heroes page.....

Assistant Defence Minister, the Hon Alex Hawke MP today announced in Sydney the combined Australian Defence Force, Returned Services League and Veteran Sport Australia team that will represent Australia at the 2020 Invictus Games.  32 current and former serving military members have been selected to represent Australia at the games to be held in The Hague, the Netherlands from 9 to 16 May 2020.  More.....
18 Feb 2020 US Navy expands Indo-Pacific presence with expeditionary strike group
The Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group and the America Expeditionary Strike Group joined forces to conduct Expeditionary Strike Force operations in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific.  Ships and aircraft from the US Navy, as well as aircraft from the US Marine Corps, conducted a multitude of joint, high-end warfighting exercises while forward-deployed to the US 7th Fleet area of operations.  More.....

17 Feb 2020 USS Arizona survivor Donald Stratton dies at 97
Donald Stratton, a sailor who survived the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor with serious burns but returned to the war and later devoted his years to honoring the terrible sacrifice of his shipmates, died peacefully in his sleep Saturday, according to his social media profile.  He was 97 and passed away in his Colorado Springs, Colorado, home surrounded by his wife of nearly seven decades, Velma, and his son, Randy, a Facebook post stated.  More.....
17 Feb 2020 Navy begins first major exercise for 2020
Four warships left Sydney today to begin the sea phase of the Royal Australian Navy’s first major exercise for the year, Fleet Certification Period 2020 (FCP20).  From 17 February to 6 March, HMA Ships Hobart, Stuart, Arunta and Sirius will war game in the vicinity of Bass Strait with five other Australian ships and submarines.  More.....

14 Feb 2020 US Navy takes delivery of its 21st littoral combat ship
The US Navy has taken delivery of the future Independence-class littoral combat ship USS Kansas City (LCS 22) at the Austal USA’s shipyard in Mobile, Alabama.  Kansas City is the 21st LCS delivered to the navy and the 11th Independence variant to join the fleet.  More.....

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) will be able to locate and help more veterans under a plan to include a new question in the 2021 Census.  The Federal Government expects to have better data to help guide services and support for Australia’s veterans, with a specific question asking whether someone has served in the Australian Defence Force (ADF).  More.....

More than $825,000 in community grants for grass-roots programs to improve the health and wellbeing of veterans and their families around Australia were today announced.  Minister for Veterans and Defence Personnel Darren Chester said the Veteran and Community Grants (V&CG) provide funding for activities and services within local veteran communities to help maintain the mental and physical health of our veterans and their families.   More..... 
13 Feb 2020 USS Normandy Seizes Illegal Weapons in Arabian Sea
On Feb. 9, USS Normandy (CG 60), while conducting maritime security operations in the U.S. Central Command area of operations, boarded a dhow in accordance with international law and discovered a large cache of weapons.  The weapons seized include 150 "Dehlavieh" anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM), Iranian-manufactured copies of Russian Kornet ATGMs.  More.....

12 Feb 2020 As China expands navy, US begins stockpiling ship-killing missiles
The stunning growth of the Chinese fleet over the past decade has prompted the U.S. Navy to plan a full-on buying spree of ship-killing missiles over the next five years, according to projections in the sea service’s Fiscal Year 2021 budget documents.  In his opening remarks before rolling out the Navy’s new spending request, the service’s budget director pointed directly at China’s expanding naval force as aiding U.S. budget priorities.  More.....

The unveiling of a plaque in the heart of Mallacoota will become a strong symbol of the close bond between the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and local community forged during the devastating 2019-2020 bushfires.  Members of HMAS Choules’ ship’s company involved in the two January evacuations totalling almost 1,400 residents were flown by the ship’s embarked MRH-90 helicopter to Mallacoota to meet with community members and witness the unveiling of the plaque.  More.....

08 Feb 2020 HMAS Toowoomba arrives in the Middle East to commence operations
HMAS Toowoomba and her ship’s company of around 190 personnel have arrived in Bahrain and commenced operations in the Middle East under Operation MANITOU on 31 January.  The Anzac class frigate will also support the International Maritime Security Construct in its mission to ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and continue Australia’s longstanding effort with the Combined Maritime Forces.  More.....

There have been many inquiries and studies into the suicide among Veterans and their mental health and wellbeing.  The 2016 Senate FADT Committee Inquiry “The Constant Battle: Suicide by Veterans” has become the benchmark or trigger for action by the Government.  Out of that Inquiry have been positive initiatives such as a new Veteran Mental Health Strategy and a National Action Plan on Veterans’ mental health, wellbeing and suicide prevention.  More.....

07 Feb 2020 Supporting at-risk veterans transitioning to civilian life
Programs supporting younger at-risk veterans and veterans transitioning to civilian employment are set to expand to hundreds more people as part of a significant funding boost from the Morrison Government.  An extra 170 young and vulnerable veterans leaving the Australian Defence Force annually will get guidance and a single point of contact with 10 additional case coordinators backed by a $4.8 million investment in the Coordinated Client Support program that already helps around 1,200 veterans facing difficult circumstances.  More.....

A powerful, new independent body will be created to investigate all suspected veteran and Australian Defence Force (ADF) suicides and causes to help save lives. The Morrison Government will establish a permanent National Commissioner for Defence and Veteran Suicide Prevention.  The National Commissioner will have the enduring power, scope and resources to investigate suicides and related issues as they arise, rather than being restricted by a one-off review looking at past practices.  More.....

04 Feb 2020 Competition winners get a taste of submarine life
A group of young Australians were given the VIP treatment recently when they participated in the National Submarine Competition Tour and Immersion Experience at Fleet Base West.  The competition, which was open to people aged between the ages of 18 and 35, saw more than 1800 Australians compete for the chance to see what it takes to be a submariner.  More.....
04 Feb 2020 Flags on Navajo Nation lowered to honor deceased Code Talker
Flags on the Navajo Nation will be lowered Monday to honor a revered Navajo Code Talker who died in New Mexico last week.  Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said in a statement that all flags will fly at half-staff as a tribute to Joe Vandever Sr. through Thursday.  Vandever died Friday of health complications in Haystack, according to his family.  He was 96.  More.....
04 Feb 2020 Destroyer wrecked in deadly 2017 accident returns to sea
The U.S. Navy destroyer Fitzgerald, which was badly damaged in a 2017 collision off Japan that claimed the lives of seven sailors, is underway for its first significant at-sea time since arriving at Ingalls Shipbuilding two years ago.  The ship will get a full shakedown of its navigation, mechanical, electrical, propulsion, communications and combat systems to verify it is ready to rejoin the fleet, according to a release from Naval Sea Systems Command.

Austal’s shipyards and service centers in Australia have been approved to bid for and provide support services, including ship repairs, maintenance and sustainment activity for US Navy and Military Sealift Command (MSC) ships.  The announcement comes after the Australian shipbuilder signed an agreement of boat repair (ABR) with the navy.  More.....

The Royal Australian Navy Anzac-Class frigate HMAS Parramatta today departed Fleet Base East in Sydney for a four-month deployment to South East Asia.  Parramatta will participate in several major military exercises to enhance interoperability and build practical cooperation with Navy partners including India, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam.  More.....

En route to Operation MANITOU in the Middle East region, HMAS Toowoomba took advantage of a logistics stop in Mumbai to play a cricket match against the Cricket Club of India (CCI) on Australia Day.  On a hazy morning without a whiff of breeze, CCI won the coin toss and elected to bat.  The home side’s opening batsmen immediately took a long handle to Toowoomba’s bowling attack.  More.....

The U.S. Navy is desperately trying to get away from shooting down anti-ship missiles with other missiles, and the carrier Gerald R. Ford could prove useful in the pursuit of alternatives.  A major difference with Ford over its Nimitz-class predecessors is its twin A1B nuclear reactors that produce more than three times the electrical power of the reactors on Nimitz:  More than 100 megawatts.  More.....

Royal Marines raided the Arctic coastline and secured a vital landing point for supply lines working alongside a Norwegian stealth missile ship.  The exercise in the fjords of northern Norway saw marines of Plymouth-based 47 Commando, the small boat raiding specialists of 3 Commando Brigade, work closely with Norwegian counterparts and their stealth corvette.  More.....
