29 Jan 2020 Navy conducts year’s first FONOP in South China Sea
When the U.S. Navy’s littoral combat ship Montgomery on Saturday skirted a disputed island in the South China Sea, Beijing scrambled two armed fighter-bomber jets and “expelled it” from the area, the state-run media reported.  Montgomery’s “freedom of navigation operation” was the first Navy FONOP this year in the South China Sea.  The sea service conducts FONOPs to reemphasize that it’s an international byway, open to all shipping.  More.....

It has been painfully obvious for years that our major ally, the US, major regional partner, Japan, and major market, China, all see more strategic value in northern Australia than successive federal governments and much of our defence establishment.  At a time when the US has been trying to reduce the burden of overseas military commitments, the ‘rotational deployments’ of US Marine Corps troops to the Top End—now in their ninth year—are based on an American judgement that northern Australia is increasingly important to Asia’s security.  More.....
