31 May 2017	Talking to the chiefs: Ray Griggs (part 1) In 2002 Ray Griggs, then captain of the frigate HMAS Arunta, took his ship to the Persian Gulf to help enforce UN sanctions against Iraq. The Anzac-class frigate was equipped with eight air defence missiles and a dated conventional radar system. Arunta is back in the Middle East now with 32 missiles, a front line helicopter and phased array radar system developed in Australia—one of the world’s best. More.....
30 May 2017	UK: Workers hospitalized after carbon monoxide leak on submarine Shipbuilders and Royal Navy personnel working on the UK’s newest Astute-class submarine were taken to hospital on Saturday after a carbon monoxide leak was discovered inside the submarine. According to North West Evening Mail, the evacuation from future HMAS Audacious started when sensors detected high carbon monoxide levels. More.....

28 May 2017	Navy’s LHDs under the microscope The Royal Australian Navy’s flagship, HMAS Canberra, has completed trials off the NSW coast to help engineers assess whether its mechanical problems have been caused by a serious design flaw or a less serious issue, such as degraded seals. The Navy’s two giant Amphibious Assault Ships, also known as Landing Helicopter Docks or LHDs, at 27,000 tonnes, they are the biggest ships ever operated by the RAN. Both have had problems with the two large ‘azimuth pods’ which drive and steer the vessels. More.....
26 May 2017	Long Tan Bursary recipients announced Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan today congratulated the 37 students from across Australia who will receive financial support towards their post-secondary education as recipients of a Long Tan Bursary. Mr Tehan said the Long Tan Bursary honoured the service and sacrifice of Australia’s Vietnam War veterans by providing financial support for their children to undertake post-secondary education. Recipients of the Long Tan Bursary receive financial assistance of up to $12,000 over three years. More.....
26 May 2017	Future USS Gerald R. Ford starts acceptance trials The U.S. Navy’s future aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) departed Naval Station Norfolk for its second set of sea trials, known as acceptance trials (AT) on May 24. During acceptance trials, the Navy’s Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) will test the ship’s ability to conduct operations at sea and verify that the ship is constructed in accordance with contract specifications. 26 May 2017	Navy safely responds to fire in HMAS Maryborough On 26 May 2017, HMAS Maryborough reported a fire in the engine room while at sea, operating north east of Darwin. The ship’s crew extinguished the fire in accordance with procedures. No crew members were injured in the incident. The ship is being returned to Darwin for inspection and an assessment of any damage. An investigation into the incident is now underway.
26 May 2017	Naval Shipbuilding College Request for Proposal Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP, today announced the release of a Request for Proposal for the Naval Shipbuilding College. The Naval Shipbuilding College is a key initiative in the Naval Shipbuilding Plan, released in May 2017. Minister Pyne said the College would attract, train, and retrain naval shipbuilding workers for the Government’s $90 billion shipbuilding program. More.....

18 May 2017	Funding Grants For Women's Leadership Development Women & Leadership Australia (WLA) is administering a national initiative to support the development of female leaders across Australia’s naval sector. The initiative is providing women with grants of between $3,000 and $8,000 to enable participation in a range of leadership development programs. The leadership development programs are part-time and delivered nationally via WLA’s blended learning model. Scholarship funding is strictly limited and has to be allocated prior to the end of this financial year (June 30). 17 May 2017	Ex-HMAS Sydney retires to Western Australia Minister for Defence Personnel Dan Tehan said Ex-HMAS Sydney would leave Sydney Harbour today to be towed to Western Australia for recycling by Australian company Birdon Pty Ltd. Ex-HMAS Sydney had an illustrious career during her 32 years in service with the Royal Australian Navy,” Mr Tehan said. “The Adelaide Class Frigate was involved in operations spanning the Middle East, East Timor, Fiji and the Solomon Islands and earned a Meritorius Unit Citation during the First Gulf War in 1991. 17 May 2017	US Navy needs to grow faster, navy chief urges The U.S. Navy needs to take steps that will ensure the fleet starts growing and improving right away if it wants to remain competitive, Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. John Richardson said on Tuesday in Singapore. In a report released on Tuesday and titled The Future Navy, CNO outlined what the future fleet should look like. The white paper’s two main conclusions are that the navy needs to grow to a projected strength of 350 units and that new platforms and operational concepts must be incorporated. More.....
17 May 2017	Australian Navy’s third air warfare destroyer receives mast In another step towards completing hull integration in the coming months, Royal Australian Navy’s third air warfare destroyer, the future Sydney, received her mast on May 15. AWD Alliance, with shipbuilder ASC at the helm, loaded out the mast onto the hull of Sydney, following a mast stepping ceremony that was held last week. The mast stepping ceremony celebrates a long standing naval tradition, dating back to the ancient Romans, which involves placing a coin under the mast of a ship for good luck. More.....

16 May 2017	Securing Australia's naval shipbuilding and sustainment industry The Turnbull Government has released Australia’s first Naval Shipbuilding Plan, outlining the nation’s largest ever programme of naval shipbuilding and sustainment. The plan includes a massive injection of funds - $1.3 billion - to develop vital infrastructure in the nation’s shipyards so that we can build the Navy's next generation of naval vessels here in Australia. The Naval Shipbuilding Plan will end the boom-bust cycle that has afflicted the industry for many years, providing certainty for local businesses and shipbuilding workers. More.....
15 May 2017	Singapore Navy hosts its first international maritime review Over 40 ships and 44 nations attended the Republic of Singapore Navy’s first ever international maritime review to May 15. The event took place at RSS Singapura, Changi Naval Base and was attended by more than 30 navy chiefs, vice navy chiefs and directors-general of coast guards, and more than 40 flag rank officers, according to the Singapore ministry of defense. The international review is part of a series of events held to mark the Singapore Navy’s 50th anniversary. More.....

11 May 2017	2016 Client Satisfaction Survey results support client centric reform Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan said the $166.6 million provided in this year’s Budget to implement the first stage of modernising the Department of Veterans’ Affairs’ (DVA) processes and IT system would improve client satisfaction with DVA as results of the 2016 Client Satisfaction Survey were released today. The 2016 Client Satisfaction Survey of more than 3,000 randomly selected DVA clients, including veterans, war widows/ers, carers and dependants, found an overall satisfaction rating with DVA services of 83%. 10 May 2017	The last of the few yachties One Dominion Yachtsmen Scheme participant, possibly the last one of the original 500, had a number of narrow escapes during the Second World War. Lieutenant Doug Gilling (retd), 95, said he tried to join the Army just after the 6th and 7th Divisions left for the Middle East. “I was told to come back in a few months when recruiting for the 8th Division was going to start, but luckily I missed that, otherwise I wouldn’t have been here today,” he said. 10 May 2017	Yachtsmen plaque dedicated at Memorial The gritty persistence of a Melbourne historian to have a forgotten group of Second World War sailors recognised finally paid off when a plaque was dedicated to them at the Australian War Memorial on 4 May. About 500 Australian volunteers answered a call from the British Admiralty and joined the Dominion Yachtsmen Scheme. The scheme was introduced following an appeal to the dominions from the British Admiralty in June 1940 to surge ‘gentlemen’ with yachting experience into service with the Royal Navy. More.....
10 May 2017	Regional defence ties strengthened as Exercise Bersama Shield wraps up Members of the Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA) have improved their ability to work together during Exercise Bersama Shield 17. From 26 April to 9 May 2017, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand and the United Kingdom conducted the exercise in international waters, off the coast of Malaysia as part of the longest standing multilateral arrangement in South East Asia. 09 May 2017	Mental health support for veterans and their families, and medical coverage for veterans of nuclear testing The Government will expand the range of mental health conditions current and former Australian Defence Force (ADF) members can seek treatment for on a non-liability basis as part of the 2017–18 Budget. The Government will also provide a Gold Card to cover the health care costs of the surviving participants of the British Nuclear Test program in Australia in the 1950s and 1960s and veterans who served as part of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF). The Government has allocated $133.1 million for this initiative to cover eligible veterans. More.....

08 May 2017	Australian Navy contracts CHC Group for SAR services The Royal Australian Navy has contracted CHC Group to provide aviation emergency response services out of the Australian Navy base at Nowra, on the south coast of New South Wales. CHC Group announced the 15 month contract on Sunday adding that crash response services will be delivered at HMAS Albatross until the proposed commencement of an ADF wide contract in 2018. More.....

05 May 2017	Australian OPV contender Austal sets up design office in Adelaide Western Australian shipbuilder Austal is establishing a new design and project management office in Adelaide, South Australia, in a bid to secure a contract for the construction of Australian Navy offshore patrol vessels but also to support the company’s expansion into one of Australia’s two major shipbuilding hubs. Austal said the new office will initially support preparations for the $3 billion offshore patrol vessel (OPV) project, which will see 12 vessels constructed for the Royal Australian Navy from 2018. It will also enable Austal to prepare for the Government’s Future Frigate project, comprising nine vessels to be constructed in Adelaide from 2020. More.....
05 May 2017	ADV Fourcroy officially joins the fleet The first of two Austal-built Cape Class Patrol Boats has officially joined the Royal Australian Navy fleet. Australian Defence Vessel (ADV) Cape Fourcroy, was handed over to Navy by Austal and the Australian White Ensign was hoisted for the first time. Commanding Officer Cape Fourcroy Commander Mark Taylor ordered the crew to ‘cheer ship’ after a naming ceremony was held for the boat alongside Fleet Base West on 1 May. More..... View video.....

04 May 2017	Increased reimbursement for medical expenses Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan today said veterans could now claim up to $1,000 reimbursement for medical expenses when they have applied to the Veterans’ Review Board (VRB) or the Specialist Medical Review Council (SMRC) review process. Mr Tehan said the reimbursement amount had been increased from $467.50 to $1,000 for each medical condition to encourage the early submission of medical evidence. More.....
04 May 2017	Supporting Younger Veterans Grants Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan today announced $4.25 million for a grants program to support younger veterans. The Supporting Younger Veterans (SYV) Grants Program will provide $4.25 million over five years to ex-service organisations to encourage partnerships that will deliver innovative and sustainable services for younger veterans. “The Government recognises the importance of the transition phase for Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel as they leave the military,” Mr Tehan said. 03 May 2017	US Navy research lab makes battery breakthrough The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) has developed a battery that is safer than fire-prone lithium-ion batteries, allowing for some recently banned applications to return to navy ships and other platforms. Researchers from NRL’s Advanced Electrochemical Materials group are leading an effort to create an entire family of safer, water-based, zinc batteries. They have demonstrated a breakthrough for nickel–zinc (Ni–Zn) batteries in which a three-dimensional (3-D) Zn “sponge” replaces the powdered zinc anode traditionally used. More.....

02 May 2017	Singapore Navy to commission first littoral mission vessel on 50th anniversary The Republic of Singapore Navy is set to commission the first littoral mission vessel RSS Independence on its 50th anniversary on May 5. “This will be a significant moment to mark the Navy’s coming of age at 50 years, as we complete our 3rd generation transformation, as we move into our redesign for LMV Indy to be the lead platform, to be, if I can borrow the phrase, the ‘flagship of our future Navy’,” Republic of Singapore Navy chief, Rear-Admiral (RADM) Lai Chung Han, said in May, last year. 02 May 2017	US Navy considering use of UAVs for man-overboard situations The U.S. Navy is looking at the possibility of using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for man-overboard situations in which the UAVs would help keep a visual on the sailor in the water. According to the Naval Safety Center, since 2006 more than 110 sailors and marines have fallen overboard, and eight lost their lives. Operating during rough seas and low visibility increases the risk of someone going overboard, and at the same time, is the most difficult time to maintain a visual on the Sailor. More.....

01 May 2017	Battle of the Coral Sea commemorative event Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Timothy Barrett AO, CSC, RAN hosted a commemorative ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea (4-8 May 1942) aboard HMAS Choules on the 1st of May in the Coral Sea. The ceremony honoured the sacrifices of all Navy personnel on both sides who lost their lives during the battle. Attendees at the ceremony included the Governor General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK, MC and Lady Lyn Cosgrove, Federal Attorney-General Senator the Hon George Barndis QC, (representing the Prime Minister of Australia), Minister for Defence, Senator The Hon Marise Payne, State Minister for Defence (Japan), Mr Kenji Wakamiya, Ambassador of Japan to Australia His Excellency Sumio Kusaka, US Charge D’Affaires, Mr James Caruso, Chief of Defence Force Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin AC and Commander US Pacific Fleet Admiral Scott Swift.
01 May 2017	Royal Navy’s fourth nuclear submarine launched HMS Audacious, the fourth of overall seven Astute-class nuclear-powered submarines the Royal Navy will operate, was launched on April 28, at BAE Systems’ Devonshire Dock Hall, in Scotland. HMS Audacious will now test her propulsion and combat systems before joining the Royal Navy in 2018. As her sister ships, HMAS Audacious will be carrying Spearfish heavyweight torpedoes and the Tomahawk cruise missiles. More.....
30 Apr 2017	HMAS Wollongong deploys to the South West Pacific HMAS Wollongong has embarked on a voyage to the South West Pacific as part of the ADF enduring commitment to assist with building security capacity in the region. Wollongong’s South West Pacific deployment will see the Armidale-class patrol boat visit Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji and New Caledonia. Through the course of the deployment Wollongong will work with each country to enhance fisheries protection and maritime surveillance capability, and to develop interoperability with the ADF. 29 Apr 2017	Minister for Defence visits HMAS ARUNTA in the Gulf Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, yesterday met with Royal Australian Navy personnel aboard HMAS Arunta in the Persian Gulf. HMAS Arunta is on a nine month deployment to Operation MANITOU, Australia’s contribution to maritime security operations in the region, including counter terrorism, counter piracy and narcotics interdiction. 28 Apr 2017	China and the South China Sea: ‘you shall not pass’ Recently, a senior Vietnamese official asked Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi in Phnom Penh if negotiations with ASEAN on a South China Sea Code of Conduct (COC) would be completed by the end of the year. Mr Wang and his officials laughed it off, a Southeast Asian diplomat told me. A Vietnamese observer said he felt sorry for ASEAN. ‘They are just using the code of conduct to buy time.’ Chinese cynicism about the COC belies apparent progress. More.....

27 Apr 2017	Regional cooperation on display as Five Powers Exercise gets underway Exercise Bersama Shield 2017 commenced today in Malaysia and Singapore with Australian Defence Force personnel supporting South East Asia’s longest enduring multilateral defence relationship, the Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA). The long-running Bersama exercise series aims to enhance the interoperability between the founding members of the FPDA - Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and the United Kingdom. More.....
27 Apr 2017	US Navy helicopter crew safe after crash near Guam A U.S. Navy helicopter embarked on Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Dewey crashed in waters near Guam on Thursday, the U.S. Navy said. The entire crew of the MH-60R helicopter, including two pilots and one aircrewman, were safely recovered by USS Dewey (DDG 105) and suffered no apparent injuries. More.....
26 Apr 2017	CBO: 355 ship fleet would cost the US Navy $102 billion per year The U.S. Navy would have to spend $102 billion per year to build and operate a 355 ship navy, an analysis by the Congressional Budget Office has concluded. The assessment was carried out by the agency after the navy released a new force structure assessment in December 2016 which called for a 355 ship fleet. CBO estimates that the earliest the navy could achieve its fleet goal would be in 2035, or in about 18 years, provided that it received sufficient funding. More.....
26 Apr 2017	Australia kicks off replacement Pacific Patrol Boat construction Australia started the construction phase of the replacement Pacific Patrol Boat program with a steel cutting ceremony in Western Australia on April 26. Up to 21 steel-hulled vessels are set to replace the existing fleet of Pacific Patrol Boats as part of Australia’s new Pacific Maritime Security Program. 26 Apr 2017	China launches first domestically-built aircraft carrier BEIJING (Reuters) – China on Wednesday launched its first domestically built aircraft carrier, which will join an existing one bought second-hand, amid rising tensions over North Korea and worries about Beijing’s assertiveness in the South China Sea. State media has quoted military experts as saying the carrier, designed in China and built in the northeast port of Dalian, is not expected to enter service until 2020, as it will take time to fully kit out and arm. 25 Apr 2017	Royal Australian Navy receives first of two Cape-class patrol boats The Royal Australian Navy received its first Cape-class patrol boat during a delivery ceremony held at Austal’s Henderson shipyard in Western Australia. The Australian Defence Vessel (ADV) Cape Fourcroy is the first of two 58 metre patrol vessels that will be chartered by the Commonwealth of Australia on behalf of the Royal Australian Navy, which awarded the A$63 million contract to Austal in December 2015. The article by Mr Matthew Benns in the Daily Telegraph, “What a ship fight” 25 April, is incorrect and misleading in its assertions. 24 Apr 2017	Future Russian Navy’s main warships mentioned in Moscow On April 21st, the session of the Russian Defence Ministry Board has been held in Moscow under the leadership of the head of the military department General of the Army Sergei Shoigu. In his opening speech, the Minister of Defence stated that such multipurpose frigates as the Admiral of Soviet Union Fleet Gorshkov fitted with high-precision long-range armament were to become main warships of the Russian Navy and raise its combat potential by 30%. 24 Apr 2017	Inquiry into military honours Minister for Defence Personnel Dan Tehan has asked for an investigation into the issue of unit recognition for service with the Royal Australian Navy Helicopter Flight Vietnam (the RANHFV), and service at the Battles of Fire Support Bases Coral and Balmoral. The independent Defence Honours and Awards Appeals Tribunal will conduct the investigation. The fighting at the Battles of Fire Support Bases Coral and Balmoral was some of the bloodiest and intense fighting by Australians in the Vietnam War where 26 Australians lost their lives and many more were wounded. 23 Apr 2017	US aircraft carrier loses aircraft en route to North Korea A U.S. Navy pilot flying from the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier crashed while attempting to land during routine flight operations in the Celebs Sea. The pilot ejected and was quickly recovered by an embarked helicopter. The navy said the incident, which took place April 21, was under investigation, adding that the crash occurred as the F/A-18E was on final approach to the carrier. More.....
