Australians offered a place in the ballot for Anzac Day commemorations at Gallipoli in 2015 have four weeks left to accept or decline their place at next year’s centenary Dawn Service.  The deadline to confirm attendance at the commemorations is 11:59 pm AEDT Saturday, 25 October 2014. The Royal Australian Navy’s participation in Ocsober was officially launched today with a 24-hour swimming event in Canberra.  Ocsober is an initiative of Life Education Australia, which provides drug and health education to Australian children.  More.....
24 Sep 2014 Space Surveillance Telescope facilities a step closer
A $63 million facilities project to support the Defence Space Surveillance Telescope has been referred to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works. The project, at the Harold E Holt Naval Communications Station in Exmouth, WA, involves the construction of a telescope enclosure facility and associated supporting infrastructure, including roads.  More.....
21 Sep 2014 HMAS Toowoomba intercepts drugs off Africa
A combined Australian and New Zealand operation 260 km off the coast of Africa has seized more than 5.6 tonnes of cannabis resin worth an estimated $280 million (AUD).  The five day operation involved Royal Australian Navy frigate HMAS Toowoomba and a Royal New Zealand Air Force P-3K2 Orion which was called to assist in bad weather.  More.....

A new $133 million Defence eHealth System linking Australian Defence Force (ADF) members’ health data from recruitment to discharge was today launched by the Assistant Minister for Defence, Stuart Robert.  Mr Robert said the Australian Government is committed to ensuring ADF members are provided with the best possible health care.  More.....

Members of the Australian Division of the HMS Ganges Association and cadets from Training Ship Tingara gathered at the HMAS Cerberus Memorial Chapel of Saint Mark on 7 September to remember the loss over 500 boy seamen killed in the Second World War.  More.....

On 12 September 2014, based on advice from the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, the Prime Minister raised the National Terrorism Public Alert Level to HIGH.  This means that the risk of a terrorist attack on Australia is likely; but there is no known imminent threat.  More.....

19 Sep 2014 Pension Increase For The Veteran Community
From 20 September 2014, veterans, their partners, war widows and widowers across Australia will see an increase to their pensions.  I am pleased to confirm that the Abbott Government has delivered upon its promise to annually index the income limit for the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card (CSHC) to CPI.  This will provide a fairer income limit for card holders and will mean around 120 additional DVA clients will now be eligible for the Card in 2014-15.  More.....

18 Sep 2014 Navy ships deliver supplies to Solomon Islands
Two Royal Australian Navy landing craft have delivered vital supplies to remote communities in Solomon Islands as part of Australia’s commitment to provide support to the region.  HMA Ships Labuan and Tarakan transported education, medical and flood relief supplies from the capital Honiara to coastal communities in need. Labuan headed north and east to Tulaghi and Auki, with her sister ship Tarakan heading south to Guadalcanal’s very remote Weather Coast.  More.....

A team of eminent archaeologists, historians and researchers from Australia, New Zealand and Turkey have uncovered more than 14 kilometres of trench - much of it in the original frontline - leading to rare insights into the often forgotten struggles of those who fought on the Gallipoli Peninsula 100 years ago. 15 Sep 2014 Grants Help Communities Honour Our Servicemen and Women
Today I announce more than $178,000 in funding for community projects honouring Australia’s servicemen and women.  The Australian Government funding, provided under the Saluting Their Service grants programme, will assist 68 veteran and Defence community organisations across Australia to complete projects that pay tribute to men and women who have served, and continue to serve, our country in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.  More.....
15 Sep 2014 Commemorating Navy’s WWI achievements
An exhibition showcasing the efforts of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in World War One (WWI) has been unveiled at the Australian National Maritime Museum.  The travelling exhibition titled War at Sea: The Navy in WWI will be on display at the Sydney based museum until May 2015, and highlights the Navy’s role in the war, which was vital but far less publicised than the land campaigns.  More.....

14 Sep 2014 Navy remembers men on eternal patrol
HMAS Yarra, anchored in Simpson Harbour, Papua New Guinea, was the backdrop for more than 1500 people who stopped to commemorate the 35 lives lost when HMAS AE1 went missing on this day, 100 years ago.  Having recently conducted a search for the lost submarine off the Duke of York Islands, the service was particularly poignant for the crew of Yarra.  More.....
14 Sep 2014 Submarine loss commemorated 100 years on
The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) has commemorated the 100th anniversary of the disappearance of its first submarine, HMAS AE1, with memorial services in Papua New Guinea and across Australia.  In a ceremony held in Rabaul, Papua New Guinea, close to where the ship was last seen, Navy members, local dignitaries, traditional land owners and descendants of the crew gathered to remember the ship lost on 14 September 1914.  More.....
14 Sep 2014 Chief of the Defence Force statement on Iraq
Following the Government’s decision to prepare to contribute to international led efforts to disrupt and degrade ISIL, the Australian Defence Force will now deploy approximately 600 ADF personnel to the Middle East.  The Australian contingent will move to the United Arab Emirates where they will prepare to respond to future Government decisions regarding Iraq.  This deployment will include up to eight F/A-18F Super Hornet aircraft which will be available to assist in Iraq.  More.....

13 Sep 2014 Japanese training squadron honours lost Australian WWII sailors
A sea of white marched towards the Kuttabul memorial to pay respects to the 21 crew members who died when a torpedo from a Japanese midget submarine sank HMAS Kuttubul, a converted ferry used as sailor's accommodation in World War II.  One-hundred-and-seventy Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force officers and crew under training marched through Garden Island Navy base to the memorial, where they formed a parade and watched on as Rear Admiral Hideki Yuasa, Commander Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force Training Squadron laid a wreath.
12 Sep 2014 Exercise KAKADU 2014 concludes with sea battle over disputed territory
The Royal Australian Navy’s largest maritime warfare exercise has ended after a final week of war games off the coast of Darwin.  Exercise KAKADU, held from 25 August to 12 September 2014, involved eight ships, 26 aircraft and more than 1200 people from 15 Asia Pacific and Indian Ocean navies. The exercise concluded with a ‘free play’ scenario where the friendly nations were divided into two fictional enemy forces to battle at sea over disputed territory.  More.....

Recognising the unique nature of military service, I am pleased to announce a new trial initiative that will help wounded, injured or ill veterans achieve employment opportunities as part of their recovery. As a nation, we owe a great debt to the men and women who have served in our Defence Force. It is incumbent upon us to do everything we can to facilitate the rehabilitation of those who have been injured and to help them transition to post service employment.  More.....

10 Sep 2014 Helicopter safety system wins DSTO Eureka Prize
Technology to increase the chances of surviving helicopter accidents at sea has won the 2014 Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) Eureka Prize in support of Outstanding Science for Safeguarding Australia. Assistant Minister for Defence, Stuart Robert, presented the award to Mr Tim Lyons of Western Australia-based company One Atmosphere as part of the 25th annual Australian Museum Eureka Prize ceremony.  More.....
10 Sep 2014 Major Art Projects to Commemorate ANZAC Centenary
Today we are announcing funding for eight arts and cultural projects as part of the commemorations for the Anzac Centenary.  More than $700,000 will be provided to support these projects through the first round of the Australian Government’s $2 million Anzac Centenary Arts and Culture Production and Commissioning Fund.  More.....
10 Sep 2014 Government announces five-year plan to extend domestic munitions production
Defence Minister David Johnston today said a five-year plan by the Abbott Government to maintain Mulwala and Benalla munitions plants will underpin about 550 jobs in rural Victoria and New South Wales.  Senator Johnston said the decision will allow negotiations to be finalised on a program worth more than $350 million, ensuring Australia will continue to have an Indigenous munitions industry.  More.....

09 Sep 2014 Royal Australian Navy sailor arrested
A Cairns-based Royal Australian Navy sailor was arrested by the Northern Territory Police (NTPOL) today in relation to a serious assault in Darwin last month. He will answer a charge of manslaughter.

The alleged offence is reported to have occurred on 9 August 2014.

Defence is assisting NTPOL with their enquiries.

Defence is providing support to the individual concerned.

As the civilian police investigation into this matter is ongoing, Defence will not make any further comment at this time. Updates on the progress of this matter will be provided when it is appropriate to do so.

09 Sep 2014 Navy continues search for AE1
Royal Australian Navy Minehunter, HMAS Yarra, has been undertaking an underwater search off Papua New Guinea for HMAS AE1, the Navy’s first submarine.  AE1 was lost without a trace on 14 September 1914, with her full crew of three officers and 32 sailors.  More.....

07 Sep 2014 Missing Sailor During Exercise KAKADU 2014 Darwin
A search involving boats and aircraft is underway to locate a Pakistani sailor who went missing from Pakistan Navy Ship PNS Nasr in the early hours of 7th September 2014. It is belived the sailor went overboard while the ship was at anchor in Darwin Harbour during Exercise KAKADU 2014. The Australian Defence Force is assisting with the search and rescue efforts. The sailor’s personal details will not be released at this time.
05 Sep 2014 Remembering triumphs and tragedies
Sailors from HMAS Cerberus, Australian Naval Cadets, members of the Great War Association and ex-service personnel re-enacted a significant piece of Australian history on Sunday, 17 August 2014.  Descendants, veterans and Defence members gathered at the iconic Flinders Street Station in Melbourne to pay tribute to the Victorian men that formed part of the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Forces (ANMEF) that went on to fight in German New Guinea during the First World War.  More.....
04 Sep 2014 Governor-General launches national ballot for Young Endeavour 2015 World Voyage
The Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd) has launched a national ballot for a world voyage in 2015 by the Sail Training Ship Young Endeavour.  Sir Peter Cosgrove, who is the Patron of the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme, met with Young Endeavour alumni and Royal Australian Navy staff crew at the Navy Heritage Centre in Sydney, where he announced the 12-month world voyage and launch of applications for berths in Young Endeavour.  More.....

02 Sep 2014 STS Young Endeavour Prepares for 2015 World Voyage
The Royal Australian Navy operated Sail Training Ship Young Endeavour is undergoing significant maintenance work in preparation for a 12-month circumnavigation of the world—the vessel’s first such deployment in more than 20 years.  Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence, Darren Chester MP, today visited members of the Royal Australian Navy crew and maintenance team to view STS Young Endeavour in the Captain Cook Graving Dock in Sydney.  More.....

A further 119 grants worth $975,000 have been approved under the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Programme, bringing to more than $3.34 million in funding for local commemorative projects has been approved to date under the programme. The Centenary of Anzac will mark a century of service and sacrifice, encompassing all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations in which Australians have been involved.  Recipients.....

Legacy Week, which commences today, is an annual reminder of the work carried out by this great Australian organisation to assist the families of those who have served and sacrificed for their country. Legacy was established by returned veterans from the First World War who promised to keep the torch alight for the children and families of deceased and wounded veterans. Today, they help hundreds and thousands of widows, children and orphans who parents have served their nation.  More.....

Three Navy personnel will compete alongside other members of the Australian Defence Force and the RSL in the Invictus Games in London from September 10-14. 30 Aug 2014 NUSHIP Canberra employs new firefighting equipment
NUSHIP Canberra's first duty watch teams have used the Fleet's newest fire fighting hose nozzles during training conducted on the Landing Helicopter Dock's quarterdeck while berthed in Williamstown, Victoria. The brass nozzles are brand new to the fleet and will replace the existing 'Elkart' nozzles.  More.....

The Anzac Centenary (2014 – 2018) will shine a spotlight on the commitment and sacrifice of those who served in the First World War.

Across Victoria, there will be a number of commemorative events marking key dates throughout the Centenary.


OCTOBER 2015

ANZAC Naval Commemorative Ball - 17 October 2015
The Naval Commemorative Committee Victoria, invite all serving ADF personnel, Australian and Allied Veterans along with family and friends, to attend the ANZAC Naval Commemorative Ball on Saturday 17 October 2015 at (New Venue) The Atrium, Flemington Racecourse, 448 Epsom Rd, Flemington (10 Minutes from the CBD).  Dance to the Music of the RAN Dance Band.  The Ball is open to all serving and former members of the ADF, NZDF, Reserves, Cadets, families, friends, Police, Emergency Services, our Allies and the General Public.
