29 Apr 2013 HMAS Sydney completes her first replenishment at sea with ESPS Cantabria
The Australian guided missile frigate HMAS Sydney has successfully completed a replenishment at sea (RAS) with the Spanish tanker ESPS Cantabria off the coast of Cairns, while on passage to Japan, where the Australian warship will embed with the United States Navy’s 7th Fleet. More.....
24 Apr 2013 Cantabria crew prepare for Anzac day with their Aussie sea riders
ESPS Cantabria has deployed to north Australian waters to continue training with the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), but before getting to the job at hand they have been afforded a port visit to idyllic Cairns, where Spanish Armada personnel will have the opportunity to march and commemorate Anzac Day alongside their new found RAN compañeros. The Armada crew were told of the traditions that would occur on the day such as the Dawn Service, marching, two up games and the Anzac Day football matches. More.....
24 Apr 2013 Changes to the Defence Act regarding Stolen Valour
The Government has today announced that it will seek an amendment to the Defence Act to make it an offence for people to wear a service medal in a manner that falsely indicates that it has been conferred on them, when it has not. Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Senator David Feeney said the proposed amendment will address concerns expressed by the veterans’ community over the incorrect wearing of unofficial decorations. 24 Apr 2013 Landing Helicopter Dock ship training facility opened
Minister for Defence Materiel Dr Mike Kelly today opened the Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) ship training facility at Mascot in New South Wales. Over the next two-and-a-half years the new facility will provide training to Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel in the safe operation and maintenance of the LHD ships. More.....

22 Apr 2013 Laboe Naval Memorial honours RAN sailor lost at sea
On Friday, the Australian Military Representative to NATO and the EU, Rear Admiral Allan Du Toit, attended a service at the Naval Memorial Commemorative Hall in Laboe, Germany, to help launch a display honouring Royal Australian Navy Petty Officer Ronald Allan Heffernan MacDonald DSM, who was lost at sea following enemy action in 1942. The launch marked the first display in the museum’s history which honours the story of an individual foreign serviceman. More.....

20 Apr 2013 ADF Assists in Search and Rescue off Victoria
Australian Defence Force personnel, aircraft and a naval vessel yesterday responded to a request for assistance, after an emergency beacon was detected off the east coast. Rescue Coordination Centre – Australia requested the assistance, and in response, the Royal Australian Air Force dispatched a C-130J Hercules aircraft equipped with search and rescue stores from Richmond in New South Wales, just after 10.00am (AEST). Concurrently, the Royal Australian Navy sent a Seahawk helicopter from HMAS Melbourne and the ship also proceeded towards the area. More.....
19 Apr 2013 Exercise BERSAMA SHIELD concludes
Exercise BERSAMA SHIELD 2013 was conducted on the South China Sea, Singapore and the Malaysian Peninsula between 8-18 April. Australia was the only nation to deploy a submarine in support of Exercise BERSAMA SHIELD 2013. Commanding Officer of HMAS Dechaineux Commander Glen Miles said operating as the enemy or “Red Force”, HMAS Dechaineux’s role in the exercise was to test the responses from participating nations’ navy vessels. This video gives a good look around the Nuship Canberra at its current state of completion. Nuship Canberra is the first of the Landing Helicopter Dock ships and is currently under construction at the BAE Systems Williamstown Shipyard at Port Phillip Bay. 18 Apr 2013 Navy Taskforce Return Home for Anzac Day
Commander of the Australian Fleet, Rear Admiral Tim Barrett, AM, CSC, RAN joined family in welcoming home members of Taskforce 150, who have returned from the Middle East after four months leading maritime counter-terrorism coalition operations. Rear Admiral Barrett congratulated Commodore Charles McHardie, AM RAN on a successful deployment, which included a record heroin interception and the disruption of two shipments of hashish. More.....

Victorian servicemen and women from both World Wars have been recognised in Footscray today with the opening of a new memorial garden honouring their contribution. Defence has signed a $1.1 billion contract with Telstra for the provision of telecommunications services. Veterans across the country will benefit from 47 health and wellbeing initiatives funded through the Australian Government, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Warren Snowdon announced today. 17 Apr 2013 Funding Helps Local Communities Honour Veterans
New plaques, restored war memorials and upgraded honour rolls are among the projects to receive funding support from the Australian Government, the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Warren Snowdon, announced today. “The latest round of the Saluting Their Service grants program will benefit 70 recipients across Australia with more than $160,000 to be allocated,” Mr Snowdon said. Veterans and Australian Defence Force seeking mental health support will benefit from a new web portal developed by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and launched by the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Warren Snowdon. “The new At Ease portal offers pathways to achieving mental fitness and resilience, self-help tools, access to professional support, treatment options, healthy drinking and clinical information for GPs and mental health professionals,” Minister Snowdon said. 12 Apr 2013 HMAS Choules returns to sea
HMAS Choules has returned to sea following sea assurance testing of the ship’s six propulsion and power distribution transformers which were replaced after a defect was identified in June 2012. The ship then followed a graduated program of trials and training which concluded with a final successful readiness assessment on 12 April 2013. Navy and the Defence Materiel Organisation have worked together to achieve this outcome. Air Force also assisted by transporting the transformers from Germany. More.....

10 Apr 2013 Navy counts down to historic International Fleet Review
The 3rd of April 2013 marked six months until Sydneysiders experience one of the biggest commemorative events since the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games: the Royal Australian Navy’s International Fleet Review Sydney 2013. Taking place on Sydney Harbour from 3 -11 October 2013, the International Fleet Review will commemorate the centenary of the first Royal Australian Navy fleet entry into Sydney Harbour on 4 October 1913. ADF representation at the Australian War Memorial has been boosted with the daily reading of a personal story of a soldier, sailor or airmen as represented on bronze panels of the Roll of Honour. The three most senior warrant officers of the ADF led the first ceremony on April 3, ahead of the official launch on April 17. More.....
05 Apr 2013 Deadline for Defence Abuse Reparation Scheme announced
National military compensation experts Slater & Gordon have urged Australian Defence Force personnel who have suffered sexual and other forms of abuse to come forward before the May 31 deadline announced today in order to be considered for the reparation scheme. Prominent military compensation lawyer, Brian Briggs, said the Federal Government had announced a cut-off date for accepting new allegations about abuse alleged to have occurred before April 11, 2011. 05 Apr 2013 Three Service Warrant Officers combined reading at AWM
An enhanced ADF involvement with the Australian War Memorial began on the 3rd April 2013. Each day in the Memorials closing ceremony, a serving ADF member will read a short personal story of a Sailor, Soldier or Airman as represented on the walls of the gallery of remembrance and recite the ode. For the first reading, all three services were represented by the Warrant Officer of the Navy, Martin Holzberger, Warrant Officer of the RAAF Mark Pentreath, and RSM of the Army Dave Ashley. This, the first story, was about Trooper John Waddell of the NSW Citizens Bushmen's Contingent, Boer War in South Africa. Trooper Waddell died on the 4th August 1900 in Rhodesia. 03 Apr 2013 Meeting Between DFWA Executive Director and Prime Ministers Key Adviser
Yesterday afternoon Alf Jaugietis (DFWA Executive Director) met with the Prime Minister's key adviser (Andrew Downes) on the indexation issue. The meeting took place at Parliament House in the PM's main sitting room. It was a cordial conversation which lasted close to 1.5 hrs. The focus was ADSO concerns with indexation, access to the PM in the current climate of frenzied activity in her office on a wide front, the current politics of what is happening within Government, and the likelihood of anything of interest to us getting up in the forthcoming budget. 02 Apr 2013 Record heroin haul by Australian-led maritime counter terrorist task force
The Australian-led Combined Task Force 150 (CTF 150) has seized a record heroin haul during a boarding on Friday, 29 March 2013. Law enforcement agencies confirm the half a tonne of heroin has an estimated street value at $100 million AUD. According to law enforcement agencies, the 500kg haul is one of the largest heroin seizures in maritime history. More.....
02 Apr 2013 First Air Warfare Destroyer mast delivered
Minister for Defence Materiel Dr Mike Kelly today announced that the 22 metre-high mast for the first Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) had been delivered to the Alliance in Adelaide. Dr Kelly said the five-storey high mast, delivered by barge from local company, MG Engineering, further underscored Australia’s shipbuilding credentials. More.....

The Anzac Centenary (2014 – 2018) will shine a spotlight on the commitment and sacrifice of those who served in the First World War.

Across Victoria, there will be a number of commemorative events marking key dates throughout the Centenary.

ANZAC Naval Commemorative Ball - 17 October 2015
The Naval Commemorative Committee Victoria, invite all serving ADF personnel, Australian and Allied Veterans along with family and friends, to attend the ANZAC Naval Commemorative Ball on Saturday 17 October 2015 at (New Venue) The Atrium, Flemington Racecourse, 448 Epsom Rd, Flemington (10 Minutes from the CBD).  Dance to the Music of the RAN Dance Band.  The Ball is open to all serving and former members of the ADF, NZDF, Reserves, Cadets, families, friends, Police, Emergency Services, our Allies and the General Public.
