30 Nov 2012 Weapons stolen from Navy vessel
Early in the morning of Friday 30 November 2012 an intruder overwhelmed a duty member onboard a patrol boat alongside HMAS Coonawarra. The intruder overpowered the duty member, accessed the vessel’s armoury and removed a number of weapons. The person then departed the vessel with the weapons. The incident was reported to NT Police. Defence is now working in conjunction with police in the conduct of their investigation.

In late 1910 the then Australian Government ignored the advice of the Department of Defence, and Admiralty, by purchasing two E class Submarines. Determined politicians with a keen strategic eye led the RAN towards establishing a submarine arm. Minister for Defence Stephen Smith and Minister for Defence Materiel Jason Clare today announced that Chief of the Royal Australian Navy, Vice Admiral Ray Griggs, AO, CSC, RAN, has signed the project arrangement between the Australian and Spanish Navies for the deployment to Australia of the Spanish Armada Ship, SPS Cantabria from mid-February until November 2013. The Cantabria deployment is a unique opportunity for both Navies and will strengthen the bilateral relationship between Spain and Australia. More.....

On Tuesday 6 November 2012, The Australian newspaper published an article (Warship’s 12,000 mile detour gives high-seas pirates a wide berth). The article claimed that the Australian Navy had declined to provide a security escort for the Heavy Lift ship Blue Marlin transporting the RAN’s new Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) ship through the Gulf of Aden. An embarked Lighter Amphibious Resupply Cargo approaches the stern door of HMAS Tobruk, off Koumac, New Caledonia, for a visit from VIPs during Exercise Croix du Sud 2012. Australian Defence Force personnel participated in the biennial French-led multi-national humanitarian assistance and disaster relief exercise. The Royal Australian Navy Heavy Landing Ship HMAS Tobruk, provided command and control and sea lift support during the exercise, which was held in waters off New Caledonia late October.

2014 - 2018

The Anzac Centenary (2014 – 2018) will shine a spotlight on the commitment and sacrifice of those who served in the First World War.

Across Victoria, there will be a number of commemorative events marking key dates throughout the Centenary.


OCTOBER 2015

ANZAC Naval Commemorative Ball - 17 October 2015
The Naval Commemorative Committee Victoria, invite all serving ADF personnel, Australian and Allied Veterans along with family and friends, to attend the ANZAC Naval Commemorative Ball on Saturday 17 October 2015 at (New Venue) The Atrium, Flemington Racecourse, 448 Epsom Rd, Flemington (10 Minutes from the CBD).  Dance to the Music of the RAN Dance Band.  The Ball is open to all serving and former members of the ADF, NZDF, Reserves, Cadets, families, friends, Police, Emergency Services, our Allies and the General Public.
